50 Years Ago February 28, 1974

Mrs. Jimmie Hensley, the former Mary Ann McCarty, was honored with a bridal shower in the home of Mrs. Chris Luke.

The San Saba Lions Club bolstered their Sight Conservation Funds and crippled children projects by $631.26 in funds raised at their 3rd Annual Rattlesnake Hunt, held in San Saba. It was Bob Smith of Abilene who was the biggest winner as he won trophies and money for catching the most snakes (117) and the most number of pounds (192) for a total of $60 in prize money.

Postage rates, originally scheduled to be increased in January, will be effective March 2, according to Arnold C. Behrens, San Saba Postmaster. The following increases will be made: Letters 8¢ to 10¢, airmail letters from 11¢ to 13¢, and postcards from 6¢ to 8¢.

Dennis Cantu and Lewis Chapa are not only proud of their blue and red ribbons but they also received special recognition as being the first boys to enter a San Saba County 4-H Food Show. Both had entries in the Snacks and Beverage section.

Miss Patricia Edmondson, FFA Sweetheart, received a bouquet of flowers from Olan Tisdale, President of the San Saba Chapter of the FFA at the Annual Parent Member Banquet at the San Saba High School Cafetorium.

While most of the San Saba County 4-H Show concentrated on food it was Annette Harper and Sherri Westerfield who received special recognition for projects other than food. Miss Harper presented a bedroom improvement project while Miss Westerfield had a childcare project.

20 Years Ago February 26, 2004

The San Saba Nursing Home held their 1st Valentine's Day Bingo. The residents were showered with prizes and sweets. Velma Poe generously donated the cupcakes for the residents to have after their intense rounds of B-I-N-G-O. A fun time was had by all.

The Cherokee Boys Basketball Team traveled to Eden to take on Water Valley for the Bi-District Championship title. The Indians were victorious over the Wildcats 65-56. Team members are #11 Curt McNeely, #34 Daniel Haynes, #12 Juan Arredondo, #24 Kevin Jones, #25 Josh Haynes, #14 Matt Reyes, #30 Seth Noland, #54 James Pool and #13 Colt Broyles. The Indians are coached by Clint Miller. The Cherokee Indians will play the winner of Dell City vs Sanderson game for the Area Championship.

Shelby Hardy, Katy Davis, and Amber Perez competed this past weekend at the District level of the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship held in Harker Heights. Each young lady brought home the Gold in her division. Shelby was the 12 year old winner, making 18 our 25 free throws. Katy won the 13 year old division with 16 out of 25 and Amber was the 14 year old winner with 13 out of 25. These three will go on to the Diocesan competition level.

W.D. Carroll has been with EMS since 1986, one of the original members. He has been a leader in this organization from the beginning. W. D. holds ECA certification and helps take care of the ambulances and building issues. During the day, you can find W. D. at his business - San Saba Produce.

John and Nancy Bannister's ninety eight year old home was the setting for a 'History Tea' celebrating the arrival of the second printing of San Saba County History 1856-2001. Guests were greeted by Mr. and Mrs. Bannister and members of the San Saba County Historical Commission. One of the highlights of the afternoon was a tour of the Bannister's historical house and antique furnishings.
