70 Years Ago February 18, 1954
A boy, Antonio Hernandez, was born Feb. 13 to Mr. and Mrs. Erlinda Rodriguez, weight 6 pounds, 9 ounces; and a girl, Betty Carol, weight 7 pounds, 8 ounces, was born Feb. 14 to Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Berry.
Mrs. Raymond Stafford and girls, Mrs. J. R. Chadwick and Mrs. J. R. Lane attended a pink and blue shower in the home of Mrs. M. Ponton, given in honor of Mrs. Theldon Harrell, in San Saba one day last week.
The FFA grass judging team, composed of Mac Parks, Donald Brandenberger, Donald Alderman and Tony Blauvelt, and their teacher, L. F. Stewart, attended the Fat Stock Show and Rodeo in San Antonio.
Two Algerita boys, Billie and Henry Fitzgerald, were on the amateur show at Daniel Baker College in Brownwood. Part of the program was broadcast.
Restrictions against the wearing of cowboy boots and 'shooting irons' were lifted for members of the kindergarten class and a 'Roy Rogers Day' was declared. Ronnie Mays and Sandy Watkins tied for first place for the best dressed cowboy. A treasure hunt followed the judging and a chest of noise makers was found by Howard Shapiro. Following the recreational period, Mrs. Thomas Menchaca and sons, Sonny and Ricky, served refreshments of hearshaped cookies and ice cream to the children present: Connie Bagley, Kathy Bagley, Barbara Brown, Esther Menchaca, Bill and Betty Murray, Stephen Taff, Ronnie Mays, Sandy Watkins and Howard Shapiro and one guest, David Behrens. The party ended with opening of the valentine box.
40 Years Ago February 23, 1984
Mrs. Layton Garrett honored her daughter donna Garrett of San Antonio with a birthday supper. Those present were her parents and her sister, Mrs. Ann Watson and daughter Tracy of Round Rock.
The regular weekly meeting of the San Saba Lions Club was held at KJs Restaurant with Lion President Gene Faubion presiding. Lion Doug Hayes presented the program concerning the return of organized baseball to San Saba High School after an absence of 19 years. This was met with enthusiasm.
Matthew Carl Dennis celebrated his first birthday with a party in the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Dennis on February 18.
A number of people have been going to the basketball games in the playoffs of both the boys and girls of Richland Springs. The boys have won all their practice games and will play again in Llano. They beat Goldthwaite after a double overtime, 72-68.
Jerrod Beck and Mitzi Long were crowned King and Queen of Hearts for 1984 in a ceremony at the Headstart Building. They received his honor by raising the most money for the Headstart program. King runners-up were Will Boswell and Arthur Hernandez. Runners-up for Queen were Angelita Vasquez and Tracie Walters.
JJ. and Ruby Smith were crowned King and Queen of Hearts at Eventide Nursing Home. The contest is held each year at the home, and the royalty is chosen by the residents. Second runners-up are Joyce Jenkins and Kirby Hooten, and third runners-up are Merle Burkett and Bill White.
