100 Years Ago December 12, 1923

R. S. Miller has occupied his new office in the old courthouse. The sheriff and county agent became too unruly in the main building and now that Uncle Sam has vacated the old building, they were transferred to this one. Judge A. W. Moursund on the second floor has been authorized to keep the lower floor occupants in trim.

Mrs. Jas. Cummins in her usual charming way, entertained the Brdge Club. Mrs. Otto Harkey was given a beautiful tray for having the high score. Refreshments consisting of chicken salad, potato chips, celery, crackers, and hot tea was served.

When the China Creek and Plainview schools were consolidated the board named the new consolidated district school the Henry School, in recognition of the 12 years faithful service of T. C. Henry, as chairman of the board.

Mrs. M. A. Woodward and daughter, Miss Iva Rue, left for Brownwood where they will reside in the future. Miss Iva Rue will enter Howard Payne College.

From the Lometa Reporter-Allen Woodward has accepted a traveling position with Mc-Cauley-Ward Auto Supply Co., of Waco, and began his duties. He has the Brownwood territory. Allen has many friends in Lometa who wish him well in his new work.

80 Years Ago December 16, 1943

Christmas is just around the next block and the gaiety of former years is at a low ebb. As so many of our boys are in the foreign fields, it puts a melancholy atmosphere on the citizenry, however the Bend Sunday School voted to dispense of their Christmas tree and send the offering to the orphan homes. They also will quilt a quilt to send along with the offering.

Hitchcock and Chambers of the San Saba Bakery are making extensive improvements at their place of business on the west side of the square. New floor covering, repainting and a rearrangement of the sales counters have been made by the new operators of the bakery.

Temporarily delayed on account of the rainy weather, the peanut growers have brought about 700 tons into San Saba for storage, W. T. Vogel, buyer, reports.

Mrs. Eleanor Hill and sister, Mrs. Clara Bodkin, spent the weekend in San Antonio.

J. R. Taylor, who first came to San Saba County in 1875, is moving back to his home place at Locker after having lived at Mercury in McCulloch County for the past 33 years. Mr. Taylor is nearly 80 years of age and enjoys good health and says he wants to get back to San Saba County because he has never seen a man who has lived in tis county any length of time who did not come back here eventually.

Com. Merle Barrett of Cherokee was a business visitor here.

Miss Brownie Baker was here from the Pete Sloan ranch.
