80 Years Ago November 4, 1943

The finest pecans since he has owned the 20-acre orchard are reported by E. H. Norris, a Kansan, who invested around $20,000 in the place in 1920. Not the largest crop, says Mr. Norris, but the finest quality of nuts since he came here. The floods of the past year along the San Saba river is believed by Mr. Norris, as well as other pecan men, to have caused the excellent nuts this year.

A wedding of much interest in the county took place here at the Baptist parsonage when Miss Ione Godwin and Julian I. Millican of Chappel were wed, with the Rev. Ben H. Welmaker, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating in the presence of a few close relatives and friends. A single ring ceremony was used.

With U. S. Fifth Army, Italy, Pvt. Lonnie Ketchum of San Saba, Texas, made his third invasion of the war when he fought in the spearhead of the U. S. Fifth Army's drive in Italy. Pvt. Ketchum is with a roughriding halftrack crew of combat engineers known as the 'Head Hunters.' Their emblem is a skull and cross bones painted on the front of their vehicle.

HOTEL COFFEE SHOP– Under management of Mr. and Mrs. S. E. Tilton, who come to San Saba from the Edinburg Country Club, Edinburg., Texas. Featuring Home Baked Pies and the BEST Coffee Miss Joyce Letbetter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. J. Letbetter, of this city, has accepted a position in the City National Bank during the past few weeks.

Mrs. Jimmie Michelson and son of Sweetwater were weekend visitors here with their parents and grandparents, the J. B. Bolers. Mrs. and Mrs. Boler accompanied them as far as Goldthwaite on their return home.

Mrs. Jerry Melton and children, Rosaline and Bobby, of Roswell, N. M., are here visiting with their parents and grandparents.

40 Years Ago November 3, 1983

Ann Tinney, a San Saba High School Senior was named Football Sweetheart by the Armadillo Football team this past week. Ann is the daughter of Tommy Tinney and Rose Tinney of San Saba. Sandy McHorse who was name Honorary Sweetheart by the team.

According to Sheriff Brantley Barker, Halloween in San Saba County was unusually quiet this year with only a few egg-throwing incidents reported. Sheriff Barker attributes the calm Halloween during the past few years to the Festivals and carnivals held at schools throughout the county.

A birthday-retirement celebration was held in the lobby of City National Bank honoring Mr. W. L. 'Bill' White. Mr. White has been a resident of San Saba for 90 years and has been associated with the bank about 62 years.

Rickey Prescott is Mr. Football for 1893-84. Rickey is a Senior at San Saba High School and plays defensive tackle and tight end for the Armadillos. Rickey is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Prescott of San Saba.

Three students were inducted into the National Honor Society during a formal ceremony at the SSHS cafetorium. The new members are, Jesper Madsen, Carol Patton and Gerod Lively. National Honor Society members must be seniors and are selected on scholastic achievement, service and leadership. These ratings are computed and recommendations for membership are then made by the faculty.

Rev. Jack Riley, pastor of First Baptist Church, San Saba conducted the Dedicatory Services of the Larry D. Sheppard Funeral Home. The service was attended by about 500.
