100 Years Ago October 30, 1923

Ransom Jones and little daughter, Willie Mae of Babyhead called at the Star office recently.

R. T. Short, prosperous farmer of the Shiloh community was among the business visitors here.

Billy Wash of Hall came in to witness the big Ford Show here.

Mdms. W. A. Martin and C. T. Jones were joint hostesses at a luncheon at the home of the former, honoring Miss Anna Martin, who will be married to Phil Cappy of Dallas.

W. D. Kelley who lives near Harkeyville is the happy owner of the Ford car which was given away. Little Opal Mae Jones who officiated was the recipient of a substantial gift from the lucky man. The crowds assembled here was the largest seen on the streets this fall.

We have a good crop of notes and accounts and they are all ripe. Our customers that helped us plant and grow this crop will please come now and help us harvest it. We need the money. J. M. GUNTER J. W. Warlick was here with a load of sweet potatoes. Mr. Warlick says some of the potatoes grown by him this year tip the scales at eight pounds.

The McMillin school, one of the progressive rural schools of the county, opened with an appropriate program. Addresses were delivered by Supt. G. L. Huckaby and county agent, F. R. Brison. Mrs. H. C. Holcomb and Miss Lyn Sauer are the teachers in charge of the school.

50 Years Ago October 25, 1973

A recent city ordinance specifying the manner and use of Risien Park (The Falls) has been revised to prohibit any drinking or possession of alcoholic beverages on the park grounds. 'Signs will be put up at the entrance of the park this weekend,' said Police Chief 'Hub' Hubbard, 'It will be strictly enforced.' The land was donated to the City and County by E. Guy Risien. The City and County have been making improvements, clearing brush and improving the road.

The San Saba High School Pep Squad named triple winners of the Spirit Trophy at the Friday Pep rally -- Debra, Brenda and Linda Bailey. The Sophomores were awarded the Spirit Stick.

The San Saba Volunteer Fire Department answered a call at the Ranchmen's Tower Hotel. Grease in a kitchen stove had caught fire and it was quickly put out. Except for a smoky kitchen there was not any damage.

Cleve and Ruby Gage, San Saba residents and owners of Gage Plumbing and appliance Co. have recently returned from a trip to Russia. The trip was sponsored by Whirlpool Appliances and was given to those dealers for exceptional sales during the past year.

Junior Girl Scouts, Troop 125 met in Mrs. Helen Terry's room at school for election of officers and leaders. Carol Barrier and Denise Martin were named Patrol Leaders; Sylvia Salinas and Nora Hernandez will serve as assistant Patrol Leaders. Cindy Surita was elected secretary; Angie Hernandez, reporter; and Sara Jackson, treasurer. The group was divided into two patrols, 'The Ready Helpers' and 'The Sunshines.' Girl Scouts will sell cookies earlier this year.

While some might think of airplanes when they hear the word JETS, four San Saba students think only of the Junior Engineering Technical Society of which they are appointed officers. Those students are Pam Emmons, treasurer; Brenda Bailey, secretary- reporter; Marci Cobb, vice-president; and Mike Granados, president.
