70 Years Ago October 22, 1953

Pvt. Emerson Brister, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Brister of Colony, is an aircraft mechanic stationed at Ft. Bliss, El Paso. Fort Bliss has its own private air force consisting of one whirly-bird (helicopter), two L-19 Cessnas, an L-17 and a new two-engine L-23. These planes are housed at Biggs Air Force Base, and Brister is a member of a 14-man section that lives at Bliss like regular personnel but eats meals at Biggs.

Mrs. Taylor McGregor of Richland Springs was in San Saba on business.

M-Sgt. and Mrs. Bill Adams and three children, Linda, Gay and Deborah, left for Olton where they visited relatives and also journeyed to Carlsbad, N. M., where they went through the Carlsbad Caverns. They have since returned home.

Several business men and Armadillo boosters treated members of the San Saba football tam to a hamburger supper at the Chamber of Commerce building and showed the movie of the San Saba-Goldthwaite game filmed Oct. 9.

PFC. Thomas D. Botello is serving as a mail clerk in Germany, where he has been stationed with the 16th Infantry Regiment since March. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Crisostomo Botello of San Saba.

San Saba netted $711.18 from gate receipts at the San Saba-Ballinger football game Friday night, Supt. S. G. Boyton reported. Gross receipts were $1,053.85. Officials were paid $92.67, and Ballinger was paid the guaranteed sum of $250.00 for playing here. San Saba will go to Ballinger next year on a guarantee of $250.00. San Saba's share of receipts at the Goldthwaite game on Oct. 9 was $649.62.

Mr. and Mrs. Harry Horak of Kansas have been the guests of her father, R. L. Estep. They went to New Braunfels to visit Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Griffith for Mr. Estep's birthday.

Misses Lania and Mattie Perry have gone to Dallas to visit Mr. and Mrs. Zollie Crass and will attend the fair also.

40 Years Ago October 20, 1983

Members of the San Saba Volunteer Fire Department were called to Chappel Rd. Friday evening about 5:00 p.m. to extinguish an automobile fire. The care is owned by Glenna Lewis. Origin of the fire isn't known but all the wiring, air conditioning, battery, etc. were destroyed. Miss Lewis had purchased the car only a few days before.

The Cherokee Indians got back on the winning track last Thursday by blasting the Brookesmith Mustangs 58-12. The Indians are now 4-2 on the season in District play.

The San Saba Armadillos scored first in the game against the Menard Yellow Jackets Friday night at Rogan Field. The Dillos who were 11 point underdogs celebrated Homecoming by surprising the Jackets with a 14-12 score in the District game. Marci Oliver was crowned Homecoming Queen during halftime activities and Sam Pledger was introduced as Mr. Spirit.

Patti Jo Vance, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Curtis W. Kemp of San Saba, was among 966 students awarded degrees at the North Texas State University summer commencement ceremonies. Patti, a 1978 graduate of San Saba High School, was awarded the bachelor of science degree in recreation.

Elton and BeBee Faught have recently returned from a trip to Rome, Italy. The tour with a group of 46 Whirlpool dealers and their wives was sponsored by the Whirlpool Dallas Sales Division and the Faughts were one of the winners in their division of the sales contest.

San Saba High School Homecoming was celebrated last Thursday night with the traditional bonfire held at the rodeo arena. The wood was collected during the day by San Saba High School students. Homecoming activities were concluded Friday night with the game between the Armadillos and the Menard Yellowjackets and the crowning of Marci Oliver as Homecoming Queen.
