50 Years Ago October 11, 1973

Miss Randolph, 3-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Randolph of Belton and great granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Randolph of Cherokee, was a first-place winner in the NBTA Twirling Contest at the Heart of Texas Fair in Waco. She was awarded a first-place trophy for best costume; won a first-place medal for divisional basic strut and was second in basic strut.

There was one baby born at San Saba Memorial Hospital during the week of Oct. 1 to Oct. 8. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Buchanan are the parents of Misty Lynn, seven pounds, three ounces, born Oct. 7.

The Future Homemakers of America at San Saba High School elected Rodney Norris as their FHA Beau. Other nominees were Lynn Hamrick, Steve Polaski and Charley Kuykendall.

A gift tea in the Dean Bagley home honored Kristi Doran, bride-elect of Tommy Wayne Thompson.

Jimmy Frost, member of the Richland Springs football team, was given the honor of being selected Mr. Football by fellow students and was honored at the annual homecoming game Saturday.

Jill Mask, Richland Springs High School senior and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Malcom Mask, was named Band Sweetheart during half- time activities at the Richland Springs Brady 'B' football game on Coyote field Saturday night. Escorted by Jimmy Frost son of Mr. and Mrs. Finis Frost, she was presented a plaque and a bouquet of mums. Miss Mask, a band member eight years, has been a twirler for four years.

Three classes of the San Saba 4th Grade visited George Dennis, High School Science teacher to view some scientific material they had been studying in their class room. The students learned how to use a microscope and got to see what 'different types of cells' looked like.

20 Years Ago October 9, 2003 Jim Byrd, hometown native competed with his cooking team in the Colorado City Boar Goat World Championship Cookoff. The team's name is 'The Goat Willie Cooking Team' of Brownwood, TX. The team won the main event at the cookoff, the boar goat cooking contest. The team won $1000.00 and 3 Montana Silversmith championship gold and silver plated buckles valued at $225.00 each. They also won Best of Show for their campsite and two barbeque pits.

Zoey Miller celebrated her 100th birthday Oct. 8th. Born to a pioneer family on the Colorado River, McMillian Community, San Saba County, Texas. When she was only a few days old her daddy nicknamed her 'Jody' which her family has always called her. Made her home with her parents on the same place until about 1965 when it became apparent they could no longer run the ranch they moved to town to a beautiful new home that she planned and decorated.

Diplomas were awarded to approximately 2,008 Texas A&M University graduates during summer commencement ceremonies. Among those recognized were Christina Gonzales of San Saba. She received her Bachelor of Business Administration Management.

The San Saba Courthouse has been recognized as a National Historic Landmark. A plaque designating the local courthouse as being registered in the National Registry of Historic Places will be unveiled October 14, 2003. The San Saba County Historical Commission presented the bronze plaque to the Commissioners Court earlier in the summer.

Jennifer McCarver was crowned Cherokee High School Homecoming Queen and Football Sweetheart at the Cherokee-Star game. Eva Arredondo was named Princess.

Cheerleaders stop long enough to pose for the camera at the San Saba Power Puff game held last Friday. Cheering at the game were Jesse Hunt, Lee Murray, George Scott Miller, Marcus Gonzales, and Ray Flores.
