100 Years Ago September 27, 1923

Miss Margaret Wilson entertained a few friends in honor of Miss Thelma House, who has entered the San Saba high school and is at home at Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Wilson during the term. Miss House is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. B. House of McMillin.

Mrs. Rice Sloan of San Saba visited at her sister, Mrs. Emma Sloan, last week.

Joe Roberds and family of the Algerita community were in this section the first of the week.

Pecans are slowly opening. The pecan crop is fully two weeks late this year.

Mrs. John Carr is visiting relatives in Houston.

J. B. Harrell of Chappell was among the weekend visitors in this city.

Mr. and Mrs. Ted Brown are the parents of a fine boy born Sept. 23rd.

The princess of the household Miss Lena Tot Cowan is a student of the state university this term. She chose this institution of learning because they will permit her to wear a feather in her hat and mingle with the highbrows.

Cupid has once more conquered his victims this time his darts landed Miss Ruth Woods and Mr. Curtis Lanham. The wedding took place Sept. 22nd. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Woods of the Wallace Creek community. She is a graduate of the San Saba High School and is popular among the younger set. The groom is a son Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Lanham and is a prosperous young farmer.

The Cherokee Girls 4-H Club met and elected officers. Those elected are: Jewel Calley, Pres., Carolyn Bowden, Vice-Pres., Jolene Randolph, Sec.-Treas., Charlotte McLerran, Reporter.

Lewis of Cherokee, recently arrived in Korea and is serving with the 7th Infantry Division.

Mrs. Dellie Bourke and Rev. Dick Smelser were united in marriage on Sept. 19th at the Full Gospel Church with Rev. C. E. Bradford presiding. They will make their home in Plainview. The interesting part of this wedding is that both parties are past threescore and ten.

Mr. and Mrs. Terry held the opening of the Terry Nursery when they displayed a nice assortment of flowering shrubs, Ivies, and bulbs of various varieties. They have a very nice new building for their displays and Mr. Terry is a graduate in this kind of work.

Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Houston celebrated their Golden Wedding at their home, over a 100 guests called throughout the afternoon. They have no children of their own but they raised two nieces and nephews. Mrs. Velma Fuchs of Waco, Mrs. Bernie Foreman of Grand Prairie and Ray Johnson of Ft. Worth, all were present.
