Colony Memorial Cemetery meeting will be April 27,2024, the last Saturday in April Please come to the meeting; lunch as usual is at 12 noon covered dish.

THE COLONY Memorial Cemetery ASSOCIATION held its regular meeting on Saturday, April 29, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at the Colony Community Church building. Approximately 25 were in attendance.

Mike McDowell called the meeting to order due to Bob Millican, current president, not being present. Mike McDowell spoke briefly asking us to remember our Colony ancestors and the rich history they left us. Mike asked Mike Thomas to open the meeting with a prayer and blessing of the food and to remember Bob Millican as he recovers from knee replacement surgery, the reason he was not here today. The meeting was then turned over to Cindy Prater, Vice President.

Minutes: Cindy asked if everyone had read the minutes from the 2022 meeting and since there were no corrections, the 2022 minutes were accepted.

Treasurer’s Report: Warren Spivey gave the Treasurer’s report: The Treasurer’s Report was accepted. Some discussion followed about future disposition of the money but no action was taken.

Correspondence: Warren Spivey shared correspondence he had received in the last year.

Old Business: Cindy reported that she had not found anyone to re-glaze the windows or replace the screws with larger screws to tighten the roof. She will continue to look for someone to take on that job.

New Business: Ken Prater reported that he had discovered today that the water well needed repair and therefore the bathroom was not available to use. Rather than Ken having to repair it as has been the case in the past, CK Stevenson made the motion that Custom Water Well Service be called to do the repair and Jackie Brister seconded. Motion passed. Randy Mask will be called. Cindy said she would like to make a collection of old pictures taken of activities and people who lived in the community and asked for contributions from family collections. She does not need to keep originals but will scan any photos and return the originals. Everyone in attendance seemed to agree that it would be very nice to have pictures from the past displayed in the building. Cindy also reported that she is continuing work to secure a Texas Historical Marker for the Colony. More discussion followed about the importance of preserving the history of the Colony community. Jackie Brister talked about the old Mill House on Rough Creek on what he referred to as the “Parks Place” (now owned by Michael Rockafellow) that was once powered by a water wheel and used as a lumber mill and grist mill. Jackie now has the old corn grinder mounted on a trailer and it is still operational.

Cindy reminded those present to sign the guest register and update their contact information to include email addresses. With no further discussion, the meeting was closed and a wonderful pot luck meal was enjoyed by all present to go with lots of visiting.
