Cherokee Happenings

It was a busy week in Cherokee! Preparations were happening all over town.

Tina and Alan Palermo were building a big pile of wood for Thursday night's festivities, the Booster Club members were gathering supplies and workers for the pre-game Hamburger supper fundraiser, the Baptist Church ladies were organizing the food and helpers for the 5th Quarter meal, Barbara Maddox was finalizing details for the Montgomery Cemetery meeting and Historic Dedication, and last but not least, Sherry Zulauf Johanson was preparing to host the Cherokee Reunion at Leroy's BBQ.

Thursday, it was a lovely evening for a bond fire along the bank of the Cherokee Creek. I think the Cherokee Indians that used to live and roam along that creek would have been proud! There was a large crowd of students, staff, and proud town folk there to give our players the rousing encouragement that they needed for Friday’s games.

I'm not usually able to attend the pep-rally at school, but since it was Homecoming week, I just locked the doors and went! It brought back many memories of my own years of being an athlete at CISD and of watching my children and grandchildren play there. Coach Roddy Maddox gave a rousing speech as always and that brought back many good memories, too!

The stadium was packed Friday night for both the Jr. High and High School games. It was Homecoming and also Senior Night. There were many out-of-town guests as well as our normal supporters.

We played Sidney, and the Jr. High team won 21-6.

The High School ended halftime with a score of 44-0.

Miss Skylar Harris was chosen as Cherokee’s 2022 Homecoming Queen and Rode Ligon Homecoming King.

Masey Shanklin was chosen as Football Sweetheart, and James Beck is the pep-squad Beau. Congratulations to them all.

The Montgomery Cemetery Association met Saturday Morning, and after a brief meeting, they adjourned to the Cemetery for the dedication of the Historical Plaque.

The Cherokee Reunion kicked off at 3 p.m. at Leroy’s. Not everyone signed the book, but Sherry got a head count of 28 alumni and a total of 43 attendees. I have to admit the heat was too much for me. I had to go home around 5 p.m., so I missed seeing many of my old friends. Sherry puts a lot of effort into keeping everyone in touch, and it’s appreciated!

Lynda, Michael, Sue, and Richard Randolph attended the wedding of their niece, Daniella Randolph, to Garrett Winters, in Wimberly, Texas, on Saturday evening. The beautiful bride is the daughter of Cody and Anna Randolph and the granddaughter of Nettie Jean Randolph, formerly of Cherokee and lately of Lampasas, and the late Charles Randolph of Cherokee.

Cherokee ISD will have Open House on Thursday from 5-6. There will be a Spaghetti Supper fundraiser for the Jr. Class from 6-6:30; then the Jr. High football team will play Hill Country Christian at 7 p.m.

I'm enjoying the little bit cooler temperatures today, and the shower we had last night was such a blessing! I pray you all have a blessed week, and until next time, we’ll see you Around the Corner.
