There is much talk about changing the world. There are many things about the world that I would like to change. The truth is, I have little power to affect the world, but I can change me. And if I change me, I will impact those around me, which will impact those around them. A ripple effect for positive change will happen, and it could start with me. My decision. My resolve. How is this possible for a person?

The Word of God will instruct you. Positive change begins by applying truth to life. The Word of God is truth. Jesus prayed for His disciples and said, “Make them holy by your truth; your word is truth” (John 17:17, NLT). We were created in the image of God. We were created for the glory of God. And the God who made us knows the best way for us to live life. Read the Bible, and let it direct your behavior, attitude and words. The Bible says, “Apply your heart to instruction and your ears to words of wisdom” (Proverbs 23:12, NKJ).

The Spirit of God will empower you. The Word of God instructs me on how to live, but the instructions often seem beyond my ability to obey. Jesus said things like, “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you” (Luke 6:27-28, NKJ). The commands of Jesus seem out of reach for human nature – but the devoted follower of Jesus Christ doesn’t live by human nature – we have the divine nature of God. God lives in us. We are His temple. We are empowered by His Spirit. We do not yield to the control of our flesh but yield to the control of God. The Word of God will not instruct you or I to do anything that the Spirit of God will not empower us to obey. Jesus promised His disciples, “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you” (Acts 1:8, NKJ).

The people of God will encourage you. The best course for a changed life is to hang around changed people. Breaking bad habits and forming new ones requires the encouragement of others. The Bible says, “Bad company corrupts good character” (I Corinthians 15:33, NLT). Sever friendships with evil people and connect with people who want to serve God and become like Christ. Paul told some Christian friends, “When we get together, I want to encourage you in your faith, but I also want to be encouraged by yours” (Romans 1:12, NLT). Being around Christian people provides us examples on how to live the faith, resist temptation, walk with the Lord, strengthen our marriage, and so much more.

You can decide today to change your life! God has provided you with everything you need. You cannot undo your past, but you can start today and set a new direction. Go ahead – decide!
