2nd Annual Holiday Community Meal

Second and Wallace Church of Christ sponsored their second annual Holiday Community Meal last week on Tuesday, December 17th.

Based on the numbers from last year’s event, 150 were expected to be fed at the event. At the end of the day, approximately 260 meals were served.

They delivered meals to those who could not get out. “We try to think of everybody who may need a meal,” said Dee George, volunteer.

They originally set out 75 to-go containers for delivery. They had 100 dine in and 92 picked up meals to go. They served until they were completely out of food.

Menu

They served Turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, dressing, green beans, corn, gravy, cranberry sauce, rolls, fruit cups, and a vast array of desserts including brownies, pumpkin and pecan pie, and assorted cookies, brought by church members.

Volunteers

This type of event takes many volunteers. Grocery shopping for supplies and food has to be done ahead of time. Food, paper goods were donated by individual members of Second and Wallace Church of Christ.

Volunteers got up very early that day and started cooking the turkeys at 6 a.m.

By 3:30 that afternoon, the turkeys were already being carved in the church fellowship hall, and food was being prepped.

Volunteers arrived around 3 p.m. There were about a dozen or more working in the kitchen, there were four different vehicles delivering meals with two folks in each car, and there were many volunteers who cooked food and dropped it off for the event.

Cleanup afterwards was completed around 9 p.m.

Feedback

Those who benefited from the 2nd Annual Holiday Community Meal were grateful and appreciative. As they would leave, they would poke their heads in the kitchen to tell the volunteers how thankful they were.
