2023 San Saba Garden Club Biennial Garage Sale

The members of the San Saba Garden Club have prepared for and worked a Spring Garage Sale every other year for the last six or so years to collect funds to maintain our historical clubhouse. We humbly treasure the heroic efforts made by our predecessor members back in the 1950s when they “saved the old mill house from the wrecking ball” by exhorting the county leaders to let Garden Club members restore and give life to it as our own meeting place in our Mill Pond Park. They organized many fundraisers to accomplish this, and members have continued to maintain the lovely building through the years. Since the 2021 garage sale, SSGC members have been able to purchase lovely canvas awnings for the clubhouse window and doorway, repaint shutters, and expand flowerbeds.

Preparations begin in the fall when members are asked to start saving items for the garage sale coming the following spring. The event has grown to a huge endeavor requiring the use of our community civic center for space. This past month, nearly 100% of San Saba Garden Club regular membership has helped put on the event that raised more than $3000 for our treasury. Members contributed items including starter plants, set up tables, priced items, organized items, worked shifts, cleaned up, worked a concession stand, or provided food for concessions. Other community members were invited to make donations, and we received a good amount and appreciate this so much! Husbands helped with the heavy jobs, and the City of San Saba provided the spacious area for us. With so many fantastic bargains, the garage sale benefits local and area residents, who always turn out in large numbers. As a further service to the community, club members take several hours boxing up left overs and delivering them to Shared Blessings, a charitable resale shop here in San Saba.

This year, the Garden Club invited the local 4-H club to join us in the civic center with their own fundraiser. The club held a bake sale, and they sold out of all their baked goods.

Yes, it was hard work, but much fun and fulfillment was had by all!
