American Legion Post No. 27 is proud to announce the dedication of a new Texas Historical Subject Marker on Thursday, September 11, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at City National Bank, located at 209 East Brown Street. This historic event marks the first time Post 27 has hosted a Department Commander, making it a momentous occasion for the local community. All veterans and families of veterans who have ever belonged to Post 27 are warmly invited to join in this celebration.
The dedication ceremony will feature a distinguished lineup of speakers, including:
• Jerry Blankenship, San Saba County Historical Commission, serving as Master of Ceremonies and introducing speakers.
• Jody Fauley, County Judge, delivering opening and welcome remarks.
• Richard Huntley, State Commander, discussing the origin of the American Legion.
• Sam Murray, Bank President, offering remarks on behalf of the bank and family.
• Don Gray, 21st District Commander, highlighting the role of the American Legion in communities.
The ceremony will include an opening prayer and pledges to the U.S. and Texas flags, led by Post No. 27, with closing remarks and a closing prayer by Jerry Blankenship and Post No. 27, respectively.
Volunteers are needed to assist with setting up chairs at the Legion Hall (705 East Storey Street) at 9:00 a.m. before the event. Following the dedication, chairs will be returned, and attendees will adjourn to a local restaurant (to be announced at the event) for lunch and a roundtable discussion with the Department Commander. Members are requested to wear a white shirt and tie or a coat and tie for this formal occasion.
TheAmerican Legion Department of Texas comprises over 480 posts and more than 65,000 members across the state. However, not all posts have historical markers, as these are awarded based on specific criteria such as historical significance, age, and architectural or community impact. The THC's marker program is selective, and while many posts may be historically significant, only those with notable contributions or unique historical attributes typically receive markers.
The Texas Historical Commission (THC) oversees the placement of historical markers, which commemorate significant historical sites, events, or organizations, including those related to the American Legion. The following American Legion Posts in Texas are confirmed to have Texas Historical Markers: Donna Border Post No. 107 (Hidalgo County) - Dedicated in 1920, this post is recognized as the first American Legion Hall built or owned by any post in the world. It received a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark marker in 1964.
Hurst-Euless-Bedford Post No. 379 (Tarrant County) - This post received a Texas Historical Marker in 2022, recognizing its contributions to the community since its establishment in 1963.
Hanson Post No. 54 (Potter County, Amarillo) - Organized in 1919, this post is one of the oldest in Texas and received a Texas Historical Marker in 2011 for its historical significance and community impact.
Parramore Post No. 57 (Taylor County, Abilene) - Established in 1919 and named after James Harrison Parramore, this post received a Texas Historical Marker in 1998 for its role in supporting veterans and community initiatives.
Hudgeons Post No. 230 (Lavaca County, Hallettsville) - Founded in 1920, this post received a Texas Historical Marker in 2015, recognizing its community service and adherence to the American Legion's four pillars.
Post No. 27 (San Saba County) - This will be the sixth known THC marker in for the American Legion in Texas.
That evening, Post No. 27 will hold its quarterly meeting at the Legion Hall, with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. A traditional supper of barbecue and pinto beans will be served at 6:30 p.m., followed by a business meeting. Attendees are encouraged to bring a complementary covered side dish, salad, bread, or dessert. Special guests will include Boys & Girls State students from San Saba High School. All members, veterans, families of veterans, and community supporters are warmly invited to attend.
