The Richland Springs Report

Break out the jackets; fall has arrived. I am planning to wear a good one next Friday night for the big Homecoming game. I feel sorry for our lovely homecoming court in their beautiful evening dresses.

Tuesday starts a crazy week in Richland Springs. I have patriotic day covered. I’m a little shaky on throwback day, but it is doable. I need new boots, so western day is going to be a problem. I’ll break out my coyote earrings for spirit day. If that isn’t enough to get your blood stirring, then put Tuesday the 26th on your calendars.

That’s the annual fall festival, complete with games, spook house and fun activities. I feel as if this year is galloping along, and Christmas will be here before I can get ready.

The Farm Safety Day in San Saba was last Tuesday. My kids enjoyed the exhibits and talks. With five girls and one boy, our group was tiny compared to the larger schools. Thanks to the threatened rain, most of the exhibits were in the main hall. It could have been horrible, but the kids were wellbehaved and not too noisy. I was pleased that my students were able to correctly answer the questions I gave them on Wednesday.

Thursday, we headed to Inner Space Caverns with 30 students and four adults. We were joined by several parents who came in their own vehicles. The cave personnel were well organized and took wonderful care of us. Sometimes, we teachers wonder if we are accomplishing any difference in the lives of our students, but the kids were attentive and listened to the guide. I wasn’t sure about the mining we were to do, but I wish I could have captured their happy, excited voices as they “discovered” gems and fossils in their mining tray. Several students and parents were planning to return so that they could do the zip lining. We returned in time to attend the pep rally for the Cherokee game.

The announcer for the Friday night game was our own Tana Lusty. I enjoyed the “Mom” viewpoint that she brought to the microphone.

The game was a nail biter. The Coyotes went into the locker room at half time behind the Indians. Locker rooms are where the “Burkhart magic” takes place. As announced by Tana, a different team showed up the second half. It was still a slug fest, but the final score was 92-70. Both teams played hard; offense was on fire. Defense was not as strong for either team. That just gives coaches more to do during the week. Congratulations to all for a job well done.

In one short week, our dear friends packed up and left for Franklin, Texas. I must give kudos to their kids especially their son, Mike. He organized the move. And when I spoke with Al on Saturday, Mike and his family had the new place 99% set up, and storage for leftovers was complete. They will be missed. For those of you who want to send a card from time to time, the new address is A. Behrens, 302 S. Glass St., Franklin, Texas 77856. Al and Billie still have their own place, but they are 2.1 miles from their son, Mike. His wife, Angela, is cooking gourmet meals for them. Al has been doing the cooking for the last nine months, so he is in hog heaven. I’m glad they are in a good place even though we miss them.

Pastor Mack Elkin has been deployed to our southern border. We have him on a prayer list. Our prayer is that he return home safely and quickly. Our southern border is a mess, and we need to complete that wall started by Trump. Our social welfare systems can only stand so much - which brings us to the needs of our country. Our President, Congress and judicial courts need our prayers. Our citizens need help with the rising daily costs. Dr. Fauci seems to think Christmas may be an issue. I have news for him. Jesus is the reason for the season, and presents or not, we will celebrate the birth of Jesus. Joy to the world; the Lord is come.

Please pray for our sick. The Patina child who was hurt in the car cash is still recovering, Heather Lewis is waiting to see a cardiac specialist. Several others are fighting cancer including Gerald McKee.

Galen Robbins was moved to a rehab facility to recover from his recent trip to the hospital. Both he and Maxine need our prayers. Halloween is around the corner. I expect to see many kids out to celebrate this year. Please be careful once it gets dark.

Our police, border patrol and medics need our prayers. I pray the vaccine mandates will go away so that people will not lose their jobs, and there will not be more problems with shortages. Most of all, please pray for our precious troops and their families and the people we left be hind in Afghanistan. Have a wonderful week.
