The Richland Springs Report

The sound of pop, pop, pop is ringing through the valleys and penetrating the walls of my house. I think it’s the hunters on Todd Lewis’s place. I hope they are getting a good supply of dove. Russ tells me it is good eating, but I can’t get my brain past the cleaning process. I guess if I was short on meat, it would be less of an issue. I’m quite happy with chicken breasts. I know; all my little dove fans are screaming at me for being silly. I just know it’s not for me.

I’m the same way about frog’s legs. Russ and his Conroe family would go gigging, and his sister would cook up their catch when they came home. I come from frog eating country and have never bothered to waste my time eating frog’s legs, so I’m not about to do it here in the heart of Texas. I would eat frog’s legs or dove before I reduced myself to bugs.

First Baptist is resuming weekday services cautiously. Tuesday quilting will resume shortly, Wednesday night Bible study will start next week, Sunday school will resume next week, and Monday Church will probably wait until October to resume. There will be Fifth Quarters starting this Friday, the 17th. Instead of meeting in the fellowship hall, we are going to have the meal in the Tabernacle. Shiloh will provide the desserts for our community meal, and First Baptist will provide the main meal. We want to proceed carefully. Should the cases of Covid rise, then services will be re-evaluated to keep everyone safe. I am looking forward to Fifth Quarter.

I have complained about the mainstream media before, but it could be worse. If you don’t have an alternative news source, your view of active news stories is very skewed. My younger sister wrote that there was no big deal about harvesting the parts of a zygote. I think she is wrong about that, but I sent her the links to the videos and testimony regarding harvesting intact baby parts from late term abortions. If that is her opinion, so be it, but at least do it from a well-informed mind.

The Coyotes were successful against Coolidge last Friday. Obviously, they hope to repeat that success this Friday. Coach Burkhart is slowly getting back on his feet. I noticed there was an increase in the tempo of practices last week. Speaking of tempo, Mrs. Perry has done a super job of working with our new tempo band. It’s a modest start, but the kids were awesome at the pep rally on Friday. They are just learning basic rhythms, but when 12 of them are banging away on their “drums,” the sound is stirring. Way to go, Mrs. Perry. So many of our teachers do double duty. Mrs. Starr, with the help of Jessica and Sarah, keeps the Varsity Cheerleaders on target. Mrs. Brown works with our tiny but dedicated junior high girls. Mr. Brown coaches the tennis kids, and Chief Ashworth and Mr. Smith coach the golf team. Several of us work with the kids on Monday as well. That’s what you do in little schools. I just love this little school.

We have no mask mandates at school, but we are distancing our desks, taking temperatures and cleaning desks after changing classes. Those who wish to wear masks are free to do so. Mrs. Soto has kept us sanitized for the last 19 months. She has some help this year as Carol Bryant has joined the housekeeping team. Speaking of Mrs. Esmeralda Soto, her dad, Mario, went to be with his maker. I’m told services will be on Saturday.

Please keep our stranded citizens in your prayers. The news from Red Gibson is better. He is improving after his breathing issues sent him to the hospital in Abilene. We have several in the community who have mild cases of covid and are staying home. Pray for our President, Congress, and local lawmakers. Covid is making a terrible mess of our daily schedules. I feel as if some people are taking advantage of this killing virus to take away basic freedoms from our society. The Christian church in Afghanistan, the interpreters who worked with our forces and women of the country are under siege from the hardline Taliban. On this memorial weekend of 9/11, let us not forget that they are our hostile to our way of life. May God protect us as we enter this new phase of negotiations with these terrorists. God is still in control, but we must be vigilant. I hope to see you all at the game Friday or at the Fifth Quarter. Have a great week.
