The Richland Springs Report

I am enjoying our strange weather. Last week, I posted a picture of the canopy tent I had over my spa. Apparently, a good strong wind passed through, picked up my tent, and flew it across the yard still attached to the bricks. It is now a mangled mess of metal fit only for the metal pile. Coming home from church today, I was shocked to see it was only 86 degrees. What a wonderful summer we have enjoyed.

I received notice that a few more of our citizens have come down with covid. Some were vaccinated, and some were not. I wish we had received advice that would allow us to trust our leaders, but we just keep receiving contradictory reports. We must trust a little and get this vaccine, social distance and take vitamins. Zinc, vitamin D and probiotics have been recommended. School is going well. Mr. Womack is making many updates to our facilities while simultaneously promoting good teaching strategies. We have excellent teachers in this school, and we are trying to bring our students back up to grade level. Covid has stolen many hours of instruction from our students, but we are determined to bring them up to the right level. Keep our school and children in your prayers.

Friday night’s game against Marble Falls was not successful, but this is the beginning of the season. I guarantee that by the end of the season we will be ready for championship games.

Coach Brown is shaping up the tennis team. The girls are preparing for cross country and basketball. All this in our first three weeks is quite the accomplishment. Keep your eyes open for progress reports.

The First Baptist Church is examining options for fifth quarters. The goal is to keep everyone safe so that school continues uninterrupted. The fifth quarters may have to be done under the Tabernacle. The committee is meeting next week, so I will let you know the decision.

We are going to have a book fair. I’m sure Mrs. Barker is extremely excited. Covid put a whole in the book budget. Please be sure and support this fundraising event. Notices should be coming home soon.

Feelings are running high over the mess in Afghanistan. Like many Americans, I have a sick feeling in my stomach about the people who are being left behind. I fear for all the women who have lost their freedom and will be treated as second class citizens. I grieve for the soldiers and civilians who have lost their lives. My heart breaks for the families left to mourn their loved ones. Most of all, I am ashamed of our haphazard withdrawal that left us with egg on our collective faces and defeat on our lips. Our brave soldiers deserve better than this. Please pray for all those in danger in Afghanistan.

Our daughter Tracy and her husband Mark celebrated their 40th anniversary on Saturday. We took my grandson and great grandson to eat at Pepperbelly’s. That is the great grandson Luke’s best place to eat. It’s hard to imagine having a child who has been married for 40 years.

So please, bow your head and pray for our country, our president and congress and all the decisions that are being made for the mess in Afghanistan. Please, God, protect our soldiers. Amid the overseas issues, we have our southern border crisis. It has taken second place to Afghanistan, but the recent uptick in covid makes keeping the border closed urgent. Our Texas towns are being submerged in undocumented/illegal immigrants. Bus loads of men and women are being shipped around the country. This imposes hardships on local governments and exposes the residents to covid outbreaks. Prayers and answers are needed for this problem. We have several around with covid, several with cancer. Please check on your neighbors to see if they are doing okay. Be wise in your movements, get vaccinated if possible, and stay socially distanced. Pray for your country, and most of all pray for our precious troops and their families. God bless and keep you safe.
