The Richland Springs Report

I went to Brownwood Sunday to get some of my favorite food… Chicken Express. Lo and behold, Russ and I drove over the new Wilbarger Bridge. It has been a long time in the building. I’m not an engineer, but it seems to me they could have fixed it so that two lanes could come and go on that road. I have this sinking feeling that we are going to be stuck at the red light for months to come. I could be wrong, but based on the length of time this work has taken, it could be many months more before the road is open. Working on the same time frame, it may be 10 years or more before the road near me is widened.

I wonder when all that trillion-dollar infrastructure money will roll around? Oh well, I’m just fine with the road the way it is.

A parent was concerned about some of the new teachings that are being showcased and debated on the news. I’ve taught in multi-racial schools, and this new critical race theory is harmful and downright racist. I have spent years teaching my children and students that you don’t base your relationships on color. You should not brand a whole race based on skin color. Why would this be less harmful than teaching that blacks or Latinos or Asians or whites are horrible because of their skin color? When you teach negativity, you reap negativity and hate. I won’t teach my students to hate based on color. What a shame that we have taken a step backward in our development of tolerance. My children were free to choose friends based not on color, but on values. Everyone is beautiful according to the words of the song.

I am concerned about the number of new Covid cases. There are so many conflicting reports as to why this spike has occurred. I’m glad our administration has chosen to go forward cautiously, without masks, but following cleanliness and distancing protocols. I hope and pray we can keep everyone attending school. Mrs. Soto and Mrs. Bryant are keeping our rooms antiseptically clean. The smell of Lysol hangs in the air.

My classes wipe down their work areas when they leave the room. We are all trying to do our best to stay in school.

The Baptist Food Pantry has food available if your family is facing tough times due to Covid. The pantry is open the first and third Mondays, but if you call either Franky or Esmeralda Soto, they will assist you if you need help before then. They have meat and daily supplies available as well as vouchers for milk and bread at the Hardware store. Please call if you need help.

Many schools are starting up this week. We will be working on our third week which means progress reports. Student athletes need to be aware of their grades. Mr. Brown has the tennis kids working; football is practicing daily. The two scrimmages they have played are helping the coaches work on problem areas. We are looking forward to a successful season.

Please be careful as you travel around; keep your distance even if you don’t chose to wear a mask. Pray for those sick with Covid, for our medical personnel, for our police officers and border patrol officers. Most of all pray for Afghanistan and our soldiers in harms way. There are thousands of refugees in dire need of help. Pray for our precious troops and their families.
