The Richland Springs Report

One of the delightful things about Texas and our central Texas area is the fact you never totally put away your seasonal clothing. I keep summer clothes out in the winter and vice versa. This weekend I put the shorts back in the dresser and pulled out the hoodie. No bare arms were visible, all skin was covered up, and I even put the heater back up to 70. I love Texas. It was a good weekend to burn some of the piles of brush since I could stay warm around the fire. The weather was perfect, the recent much needed rains dampened the ground, and the fire danger was low even if the winds were a little high.

We didn’t have Monday Church this week because the teachers had an all-day work meeting. We are in full scale STAAR mode as well as finish the year strong mode. I think the kids are finally settling down. Unfortunately, we are in the last six weeks of school. At least we are going to finish strong. The UIL academics team went to Austin to compete this past Saturday. They did not bring home a win, but we are proud of their journey. It’s awesome that our little school was able to send 16 people in a wide range of subjects to competition. Way to go Coyotes.

Plans are under way, committee meetings are being planned and calendars updated for our Alumni Banquet. I think one of the more disturbing losses of the Covid year was the cancellation of the banquet. This historic and unique event has not skipped a beat for years. There will be many happy alumni gearing up for this event. Mark your calendars for Mother’s Day weekend. We hope to see more people that we have had in years.

Students are preparing for the prom in early May, banquets in mid-May and graduation in the last week of May. Don’t forget: we do have to take all those STAAR tests in May. Please make sure your students are in school every day this month and next. I believe we are going to rock theses tests and show our government that kids need to be in school. I want to thank our administration again for keeping us in school this year.

I don’t have chickens this year. I think the massacre of all my chickens last year took the wind out of my sails. I found chicken parts for weeks. Plus, I have a pair of hawks nesting in the front woods, and a big owl that hangs around in the woods as well. Russ said the hawk was staking out the birds at the feeder the other day. I love feeding the birds, but I don’t want to put out seed so the hawk can eat the birds at my feeders.

First Baptist in San Saba is hosting a spring meeting again this year. This year they have invited Russell Miller to present his area of expertise to the congregation. Russ says he is cousin to Roger Miller. He is not a singer, but he is a good speaker. I understand he is a “young earther,” and I am not in agreement with their theory of a young Earth. There is room for discussion for both young and old Earth theories, but I lean strongly to the old side. The Baptist Church in Richland is taking a van Tuesday night. My favorite speaker the San Saba Baptist Church has had is Amir from Israel. He was packed full of Bible knowledge and Israeli history. I learned many new things from his talks.

Friday is the blood drive for Gerald McKee. We were delighted to have Gerald and Kay at church this Sunday. He said he was feeling well, but they were headed back to Houston for chemo treatments this week. If you have time to donate, please go by the Community Center on Friday. I like the fact they are having later hours for folks who work.

Praise God for our lovely rains. Once again there was a wide range of totals. We had about 1.3 inches; some of my neighbors received much less. We must continue to petition God for a good soaking rain that will fill our tanks for the summer. It will be costly for ranchers if we don’t get a good hay crop this summer.

We heard from Louise Hyman this Sunday. She is staying with her daughter. We miss her steadfastness around here. We send her our sincere condolences on the loss of her brother James.

Please pray for our politicians, the unrest in the western states and the riots that are harming so many cities. I feel so sorry for the store owners in those cities. Pray for our Congress and the President.

We need daily prayers for our police officers. If people who are stopped would practice civil responses, we might not have shootings.

Most of all, pray for our precious troops and their families. Have a great week.
