The Richland Springs Report

Our school year is rushing along. It's hard to believe we have passed the 100-day mark. Last Thursday our boys' basketball season came to an end. Now the boys will transfer over to either golf, track, or tennis. The sports seasons tend to run into one another in a small school. Our boys' basketball season started late thanks to an outstanding run to the state football game. We came up short, but still proud. We went straight into district basketball games with little or no practice. I can tell you that these boys are tough and scrappy. They work and play well together, and there is no ball hogging or show boating around. They have no room for resting, and most play the entire game. Then came Thursday night's playoff game.

Our opposing team had three individual floor set ups, all well trained and easily prepared to swap out on the floor. Our six boys did the bests they could, but they were outmanned and outplayed. By the last minute of the game, it was obvious there would be no miracle comeback for our scrappy boys. The crowd was privileged to witness an amazing end to the game. In the last minute of the game, a player with handicaps was put in the game. No one seemed to consult with our coach, but the boys turned to the opposing team player and beckoned to him to head for the basket. He shot and missed, Jayden caught the rebound and handed the ball back to him. This continued until the last seconds of the game when the young man finally sank his basket. I'm proud to say our fine young men displayed class sportsmanship. That opinion was repeated by the coach of our opponents. We lost a game, but we did not lose our pride. Way to go Coyotes. Now, we need to cheer for our Coyote boys and girls as the head to spring sports.

We had two fundraisers this week, the Cervantes family had a hamburger benefit to cover medical expenses. I think the weather was not kind to them. If you feel you would like to donate to this worthy cause, please contact the family or your local church. The school had a chicken dinner on Sunday, and I believe that went very well.

Fundraiser takes on many new sidesteps during this pandemic mess.

Thank you to all who helped with these fundraisers.

Spring break is just two short weeks away. The good thing is we don't have to do virtual schooling. I'm not sure what I will do since I can't travel. Perhaps I can knock out some of my home projects. They are varied and not any fun to complete. I guess I will feel better once I complete some of them. I'm sure Russ will want to keep me busy. I realize this is also spring forward into daylight savings time. So, for a week, I will be able to get used to getting up in the dark and going to work in the dark again. I don't understand why they are starting that nonsense so early. My hope was that the legislature would opt out of the daylight savings system for Texas, but once again my hopes are dashed.

We are in our fifth six-week grading period. I can't tell you how blessed we are as a school district that we have been able to teach our students in person for most of the school year. We may not catch up on all the work we missed last year, but we are all doing our best.

I can't imagine how far behind the students are in the schools up north that have refused to open. Closed schools or those doing virtual only are handicapping the futures of their students. Thank you, Governor Abbott, for keeping Texas open. Our businesses are not thriving, but they are at least surviving.

Our deepest condolences go out to the Esquivel family. In the space of one week, both of Tammy's parents have gone to be with the Lord. I think I would like that for Russ and me, so we wouldn't have to be apart too long, but for the family it is heartbreaking. Please pray for the Perez, Trojcak, and Vasquez de Rocha families who have all lost loved ones this past week.

Please pray for our country, the President, our Congressional leaders and for the unrest in our country. Lend your support and praise to our first responders, law officers and medical personnel. Many thanks to the everyday people who keep our country going. Most of all, pray for our precious troops and their families. I hope to see all you kids at Monday Church.
