The Richland Springs Report

This is setting up to be a banner year for weird and unusual happenings. Who would have thought we would have two measurable snows in two weeks’ time? I couldn’t believe my eyes when I woke up this morning. It has continued to snow, off and on, all day. I managed to return Russell’s gift of a snowball from the last snowfall. He was making fun of my throwing arm, but I managed to get one good shot at this arm. I can only imagine all the fun the kids had today.

We had to cancel the Monday Church because the snow was expected to turn to ice. We have been off for several weeks now, so I hope next Monday the 18th we will be good to go. Now that football is over, we are pushing the boys to come to speed in basketball. It has been a long season. I wish for the sake of the boys the end had gone their way, but that is now history.

I picked up the Youth Fair entries on Friday. Our kids did well despite the horrible timing. Kailey does an excellent job. But the fair came right after the Christmas break, and many students didn’t bring their material for the fair. Many of our tech entries didn’t make their way to Kailey, but Makayla Kubin and Paige Bailey took Champion and Reserve Champion for the technology category. Our dioramas did well, and I’m sure Ava Hoevers, Ian Haug-McKinnerney, and Emma Bryant will enjoy their ribbons. The 3rd graders entered some home décor items and artwork as well. I will post their entries next week.

We have a long stint with no holidays from now until spring break, so hopefully we can get some work done. My goal is to get everyone back into a strong work ethic. These virtual sessions do not make for work ethics. I know we are getting work done, but it just feels so haphazard. I moved my units around in 6th grade because if something happens again, I don’t want them to be trying to do cell structure and figure out terms like eukaryotic and prokaryotic on their own. Mind you, once we have covered this unit and they move on down the road, I do not expect them to recall much of this complicated unit. All we teachers can do is present the material, explain it, and hope we have made it clear enough that they can recall the information when they need it.

The ladies in the quilting and Bible study will be heading for Stonewall again on January 21st. Debbie Phelan tells me she has one spot left if you want to get away and get caught up on your sewing projects. The setting is beautiful, but the food that is provided by our hostess is gourmet wonderful. I have several projects to complete, but I don’t think I can get off. At least I finished the quilt for my great granddaughter, Halen, and the one for my daughter, Christine.

I’m sure we need to continue to pray for our country. Recent events at the Capitol have caused more unrest. I recognize there are many disappointed people, but we must work in an orderly way. Please spend time in prayer for our President, the Congress, the incoming folks who were elected, and the families of those who were hurt in the protest. Pray for patience as we move forward under a new president. Pray for our police officers and medical personnel as they continue to fight to protect us daily. We have several area folks who are fighting cancer and need our prayers.

Most of all, pray for our precious soldiers and their families. God, forgive us for failing you, and bless and protect our country. Have a good week everyone.
