June is feeling more like Texas than May did. I loved May, but we all knew it couldn’t last. The heat must come. All this beautiful, lush green must give way to desert beige, we love Texas green or brown.
Although my trip to Canada is a month away, I’m busy finishing projects, planning my wardrobe, and preparing for whatever problems arise while traveling. I have birds to feed, a husband to care for and a son-in- law to care for as well. Kathie Davie is my go-to for Mark. My daughter Chrissy will take care of dad, feed my hummers, and harvest the garden.
Speaking of gardens, much to my surprise, I found some okra growing. I did put it out quite early. It had become too hard to really eat, but the worst problem was the ants that attached themselves to that bed. I have bites on my hands and wrists. I don’t like to use poison around veggies, but these little fellows are going to die. The next batch should be better.
The school has preliminary scores for STAAR. They are not yet broken into categories, but they do give a pass or fail. Thanks to many hours of prayer, my science students did well. No summer school for them. People fuss and criticize this little school, but our test scores are good. We have some talented, dedicated teachers. I’m excited about the young blood we are hiring.
My Tesla acknowledges train tracks when it is in full self-drive. I feel as if I’m in a school vehicle with a sign that says “we stop for railroad crossings.” It doesn’t come to a full stop, but it does pause and check before advancing. I really do love my self-driving car.
The Richland Springs Preservation Society held their monthly luncheon at the Community Center on Sunday. As usual, there was plenty of delicious food to sample, and great friends from other churches and around the community with whom to chat. I keep thinking it’s too much to have so often, but the remarks and pleasure that people feel and share encourages the Preservation Society to keep going. Even wonderful people like the Carrolls and Frank Griffin, who stayed longer and helped take down the tables. What a wonderful community. Thank you to everyone who shared this fundraiser.
There will be a Preservation meeting on the 9th of June. We need to discuss plans for moving forward on the interior renovations. If you would like to share your input, please feel free to attend on the 9th. The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. We will also be discussing having a representative of the Hendricks Medical system come to a special meeting dealing with their new and updated programs for the community. Please let us know how you feel about this matter.
The school board meeting held last Tuesday confirmed the new teacher hires and put forth several initiatives to improve our school. As someone who has taught in the high school building for the last few years, I would love to see some improvements in the heating and air-conditioning systems. I either froze or boiled in the science lab. There never seemed to be a happy medium. The repair company kept looking for parts to fix our old system. As of May 22nd, no parts had arrived. I understand the problem; old system parts are often out of production. I will get a list of incoming and returning teachers next week.
We are in prayer for several cancer patients in our area. Vicky Moreno, Mark Francis, Danny Phillips, and several others who want prayer, but don’t wish to see their name in print. I heard Dolores Smith is not doing well and needs our prayers. Please remember our widows and widowers as well. Theirs is a continual pain and sorrow. Please pray for our country, President, Congress, and unity overall in our government. Pray for an end to wars, riots, and discontent. Let us return to debate and civility instead of name-calling. Lord, be with our country as we celebrate 250 years of this unique form of government. May God bless America. Most of all, God bless and protect our soldiers and their families.
