The cardinals are keeping my bird feeder busy and empty. Like the hummers, they spend as much time eating as running all the other birds away. It’s entertaining to say the least.
Unfortunately, the invasive Brown-Headed Cowbird. These are nasty birds. They invade other birds’ nests and can produce as many as 13 eggs over the summer period. Never raising them but leaving them to other birds to raise. This results in the loss of other bird populations. They also take over the feeders and scatter the scene about looking for their favorite seed. I know it’s a waste of time, but I go and scare them away when they land.
Wind and fire are foremost in the minds of area residents. Please obey the fire ban laws. These winds are spreading fires rapidly with major loss of vegetation. Many properties like mine, have dead vegetation due to the droughts over the past few years, and any fire would be disastrous. We desperately need a good frog-strangling rain.
Priddy ISD has asked Richland Springs to host the UIL competition on Tuesday the 26th of March. Mrs. Starr has put out a call for food for the hospitality room. Breakfast and lunch are usually provided for the teachers and judges by the host school. Since we were not scheduled to be the host school, there is a matter of urgency to getting the hospitality room provisioned. Mrs. Starr is working hard to get everything done by next week.
These next six weeks are crammed with activities and events. This Sunday the 23rd, the One Act Play will present their play and provide a luncheon on Sunday. (lunch @ noon; play to follow) This annual event will take place in the school cafetorium and will be on a donation only basis. Proceeds will go towards expenses for the advancement of our play. Please come and be a part of this annual activity. Mrs. Locker has put together a high-quality play.
The Preservation Society was supposed to have a community luncheon in the community center on the 23rd but have graciously moved their luncheon to April the 6th. These luncheons have been extremely popular. Volunteers bring in some delicious dishes and everyone gets to sit and visit while enjoying the gifts of our superior local cooks.
The dust and pollen are playing havoc with noses and lungs around the county. I came home from Dallas Saturday and commented to my husband about the mist I was feeling. After watching the skies, I realized it was sap or pollen coming from the oak trees that surround my house. Needless to say, I am sniffling and coughing again. It’s surprising to me because I have never had allergies before. It’s a whole new world of misery to explore.
Tennis will be playing at Zephyr on the 22nd, then at Strawn on the 28th. Track has two upcoming meets at Blanket and May.
Golf has a meeting on the 18th and then on the 25th. Softball has games on the 18th, 21st and 25th. This will be in conjunction with UIL and STAAR prep which will take place the first three weeks of April. Our students will be busy, but not so busy that they don’t get their classwork completed.
Please pray for rain in our area. Our new government needs many prayers and much support. It’s time for both our parties to represent the mainstream American. Please pray for the war in Ukraine and the return of hostages in Israel. There is so much distress in our world that only challenging work and much prayer can calm. May God continue to bless America.
