The Richland Springs Report

This cooler morning weather is a relief from months of mega heat. I do love Texas spring and fall. Those two seasons make sitting on the front porch enjoyable. The hummers are still here, but not in abundance. I’m not sure if they have left the area or if I will get the northern birds in the next few weeks. I’m leaving two feeders up just in case.

Work on the new store is progressing well. There are a few more issues on some of the older parts, but things look much better. Two large trailers of trash were taken to the dump last week. Bobby Baker was the lucky guy who made the trash trips. In the next few days, you should see some classy colors on the exterior of the store. Work on the interior is progressing. I am pleased and surprised at the neat articles that are going up for sale. Fain’s Honey, Spiral Horn Coffee, and farm products from Fredericksburg are only a few of the products for sale. Opening day will be in mid to late October.

This Friday is the one and only Fifth Quarter for the season. We will honor our athletes after their game with Cherokee. The naysayers are working hard to shake our young men, but our coaches, especially Jerry Burkhart, didn’t train up any sissies. We may be missing a leader, but Coach Burkhart has trained these young athletes. And they know how to get the job done. Never count our athletes out of the game. Coyotes fight…never die. See you Friday; come out and support our kids.

Wednesday Kid’s Church is going well. We’ve had right at 30 kids and at least six junior high and high school kids as helpers. It sure does my heart good to hear the happy shouts of kids singing songs to the Lord and learning about our Savior. Volunteers are always welcome to come in and help.

There was a slow down in the food pantry usage over the summer, but current prices are making the need for help necessary. A generous donor has promised to donate turkeys for Thanksgiving. If you know of someone who could use help with Thanksgiving food, please let someone at the church know. You can call and leave a message or contact Debbie Phelan or anyone else. You do not have to be a member of the church to get food from the pantry. This is for folks in the Richland community.

The church, all churches, are there to help people. I encourage you to find a church home especially in this time of uncertainty.

I must have plenty of dove in my area because there have been shots fired by the dozens. I’m told bow season is either here or about to start. That season is a quiet season. I’m told dove is good meat, but I can’t balance the amount of work needed to prepare the dove with the amount of meat that is gained from those little birds. I don‘t mind if you shoot them, but I’m a lazy cook. I must say even preparing chickens is more work than I want to do. I will if it becomes necessary. Until then, Lowe’s here I come.

I just want to remind everyone to try to shop locally. We are not a large community, and our local vendors need all the help they can get.

Skelton’s, Coyote Station, The Feedlot, Mann Glass, and McKinnerney Real Estate are there for us. Let’s be there for them. Don’t forget the Christmas market coming up in November.

Delores Smith has been moved to Songbird in Brownwood. Jolene Tharp is going to MD Anderson and there are another half dozen people fighting cancer. Kathy Brockman is doing better after her surgery. We hope to have her back and kicking up a fuss in no time. There are many others in our community that need prayers. George Hill is on hospice and Donna needs prayers for that situation. Please pray for our community, our country, Ukraine, and our broken border. Our school and students need prayer. Please pray for our law enforcement officers and border agents. Most of all pray for our precious troops and their families. We need rain again. Stay safe, see you all Friday at Coyote Field and the Fifth Quarter.
