The Richland Springs Report

I just feel as if the American spirit is beginning to recover from our incarceration. Perhaps it is the approach of the election date, or maybe the news that several companies have started phase three testing. It could be the cooler temperatures as well. I am enjoying the return to normal, not the new normal, but good old fashion normal. I don’t want to spend any more time roaming around with a silly mask on my face.

I have several posts about not passing on your political opinions to students. Speaking for my classes, my students come with parental preferences. My job is to explain the system, show the party platforms, and go over the history of past elections. I hope it is generating interesting conversations at home. I do stress that this is a very pivotal election, and everyone needs to get out and vote.

Johnny Reeves gave a fiery speech this morning at church regarding our responsibilities as citizens and Christians. It was a humdinger, and if you want to hear it, go to The First Baptist facebook page. You will hear several babies in the audience. We have four babies in the congregation, and it is a joy to hear them, even when they fuss.

If you missed the facebook posts, the Coyotes won both games against Darrouzette. The junior high score was 39-7, and the high school score was 56-7. Our opponents were gracious and welcoming. Their program is brand new, and they felt privileged to play a team that has won so many championships. It was a picture of where their coach would like them to be. It was a long journey, but the camaraderie was worth it. What pleases me is that our student athletes all made it back to school Friday morning. Congratulations to all concerned.

I went out this morning to tend to the chickens. As I exited the house, I heard a familiar sound, the cry of a hawk. Can you imagine my dismay when I looked up at a dead tree not 20 feet from the pen, and there sat a big old hawk looking for breakfast? The mate was circling from the other direction. Fortunately, my chickens were all hiding. Now I am going to worry about hawks. Not that I intend to spend a great deal of time worrying. I told God those were his chickens, and he would have to keep them alive or let them be eaten. I now have three of them laying little eggs. I hope they like crickets because it is almost cricket season. My daughter wants me to bring them up to school and let them eat all those nasty critters there.

I’m not sure I can do that, but I guess I should check. They do have cute little brown eggs.

I hear they are going to open nursing homes in Texas for limited visitors. That is awesome. I can’t imagine being shut up in a small space with no visitors. Now Al Behrens can go visit his wife instead of talking with her on the phone and waving through the window. I can hear sounds of joy from all over Texas. My grandson picked up Russ’s sister, Wanda Jean, and brought her here for the weekend. It was the first time she has been out of her house in six months. I hope she will feel rejuvenated after several days in the fresh air, no masks, and people with which to converse. At 86, her family is incredibly careful of her health. We had a wonderful visit.

We have put Heather Lewis back on the prayer list. The inflammation in her jaw has returned. There are at least six people in the community fighting cancer. Some will not win against this horrible disease. Our nation will honor Ruth Bader Ginsburg who died last week from several cases of cancer. She was a fighter and stood valiantly for her beliefs. Crystal Bench returned to the doctor for a possible broken ankle. I don’t know which of her sons was hurt in the Friday football game, but they need our prayers. We had two students hurt, one in the peewee football game, and another little one who tried to do a cartwheel and broke her arm. School is in full swing, the first six weeks is over, and report cards will be out this week. There will be a Fifth Quarter this Friday.

Please pray for sick community members, our President, and our Congressional members. Please, Lord, help them lead this country back to sanity and civility. Our police offcers need protection and prayers. Most of all pray for our precious troops and their families.

Monday Church has opened. It will be from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. If this time doesn’t work, it will be changed. I hope these storms will swing some rain in this direction. Have a great week.
