Lenny's Life Lessons

Happy Holidays, dearest San Saba sweethearts! I sure hope each of you are doing well. This past week has been a mixed bag of sheltering in the house from the cold weather to exploring an entirely new world.

I am not my happiest dachshund self when it is cold outside. In addition, I get so tired of mom explaining how I was found running the streets of Georgia, and with her I have blankets, a sweater to wear, and great food to eat. Um, am I supposed to let all that deter the discomfort of walking across grass someone left in the freezer and making my dachshund tummy feel like an iceberg? I half expect her to say when she was growing up she walked to and from school uphill both ways! Note to parents…unless we actually saw you do it… don’t say it!

Mom doesn’t talk on the phone much, but when her sister, Carol, from Hawaii calls, the phone becomes attached to her for half a day! I have rules in this house, and my number one rule is I do not share my mom time! What I do when I need her to stop talking and laughing with Carol is to redirect her attention. First, I jump in her lap, put my face to hers and obstruct any train of thought. If she doesn’t immediately cease conversation, I target things I know will force her to! The other day I grabbed a small stuffed Christmas dachshund off the table and began chewing on him! Mom had to put the phone down, chase me across the living room to retrieve him from my jaws! I actually heard Carol laughing all the way from the Aloha state and tell mom perhaps their conversation had lasted long enough. Hey, if it works it is allowed! The little dachshund was unharmed and now smells like dachshund breath.

I had an amazing, new, and magical experience on Saturday. I attended my first Sip and Stroll! I got to visit wonderful downtown places like Harry’s,The Emporium, Pecan Grill, and the Olive Oil store! I met so many incredible people, and during the parade fell in love with a little girl named Clara! Oh my goodness, she reached out to me, and we were instant friends! I can still hear her giggle as my wagging dachshund tail would tickle her! There is nothing so beautiful as the delight and sincerity of a child. Oh how special it is to see such a loving spirit! Okay, so it is true I am an attention hog, but I never meet anyone my heart doesn’t already love. It didn’t even matter I could smell the snacks in each store and never got to taste a single one because the entire experience filled me to the brim! I loved all of it and didn’t even mind the loud sirens as the parade passed by later.

My loving San Saba friends, mom and I wish you such joy not only for Christmas season but all your seasons! Thank you for allowing us to spend time with you, share life with you and just thank you for being! Each of you truly makes San Saba home! Love, Lenny
