A total of 99 students were enrolled in the Cherokee schools last week, according to Bertram Geeslin, superintendent. Geeslin said that 33 students were enrolled in high school and 66 in grade school. There are seven students in the senior class.
Mrs. Frances Carter, manager of the San Saba Memorial Hospital, has been granted a leave of absence. Mrs. Betty Russell, senior nurse at the hospital will assume the manager's duties during the specified leave period.
Mrs. W. W. Watkins enjoyed a happy birthday when she celebrated her 81st birthday. Her neighbors came to her home entering the house singing 'Happy Birthday To You.'
J. Y. Parsons Jr. has entered A&M College as a freshman. His father is stationed in Japan and his mother and brother are making their home here.
The first pecans of the 1950 season were weighed in by R. B. Bagley & Sons. Frank Allcorn gathered the pecans, which weighed 58 pounds. They were from a native tree on the former Joe Taylor place west of Harkeyville, the place now being owned by Bagley.
Orders reducing the anthrax quarantine area in San Saba county were issued by the Livestock Sanitary Commission of Texas. The new quarantine area is that bounded by State Highway 16, the old Brownwood road and the Colorado river. The two roads intersect at Grady's Isham store a few miles north of San Saba.
Irvin Grumbles is believed to be the first farmer in San Saba county to convert his tractor from gasoline to butane gas as a fuel. The modification was done by Garth Little, local butane dealer, and Carl Baskin, service man with the firm.
52 Years Ago September 17, 1970 Lawes Stroble, after 17 years of service with the City Water Department, retired. Stroble has been the pumper for the local water department and he also kept weather records during the 17 years.
Mrs. Richard Ferguson and Mrs. Fred McCall were hostesses for a pink and blue baby shower given for Mrs. Ken Cunningham in Mrs. Ferguson's home.
E. Guy Risien was the first pecan grower to bring a sample of new crop pecans to the News & Star office this season. Risien brought some native pecans which are opening on some trees along Mill Creek. He said he thought the late spring caused the pecans to open later this year. He also said there have been many insects damaging the crop in the county.
Welton Watson, who has served as deputy sheriff under Sheriff Brantley Barker for the past eight months, has resigned to take a position with the Department of Public Safety as a Texas Highway Patrolman. Ray Riggs, City Police Patrolman, has resigned from his post to become the new Deputy Sheriff for Barker.
Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie Wayne Woosley of Cherokee are the parents of Danny Wayne, 7 pounds, 3 ounces, born August 23 in Llano Hospital. The mother is the former Patricia Jane Andel. The baby boy is the couple's first child.
As usual Jesus Flores brought in the first bale of cotton to the W. R. Shipp Gin here and by noon, he had brought 22 bales, Mrs. Shipp said. The first bale was brought to the gin along with eight others the same day. These nine bales ginned were grown on the Joe Turner Farm. Flores brought 13 more bales all grown on the McConnell Farm. He expected to bring in more later.
