70 Years Ago March 20, 1952
In the second robbery since J. B. Parrack moved his jewelry store to San Saba from Post, Texas, Thursday night $1800 to $2500 in jewelry, billfolds, rings, watches and etc., were taken from his store. His jewelry store is located on the west side of the plaza in the San Saba Bakery building. Entrance was gained by forcing open of the Master lock.
Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Lindsey had as weekend guest their daughter, Mrs. Worth House of Austin.
Mrs. Harry Oehler dropped in and remembered us with her subscription on Friday.
One case was tried in County Court March 15, according to M. W. Trussell, County Judge. The man was found guilty of transporting liquor into a dry territory and fined $100 and cost of $23.00.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry D. Moore were honored on their golden wedding anniversary with an open house in the home of their daughter, Mrs. S. P. Everett, and Mr. Everett.
Sgt. Walter Fernald and Mrs. Fernald of Fort Hood spent the weekend here looking after their home on south Liveoak St.
The traffic light on West Commerce Street had been replaced after being out of commission for several months. The work was done by the L.C.R.A. The light is a county project.
Jack Seriff of Austin was here Wednesday to do some work for the Economy Store.
Major Berniece Lyon of the Salvation Army, who has been hostess in the local USO, has been transferred to McAllen. Lieut. John Yura has succeeded her at the local station.
Mrs. W. R. Baxter and daughter spent the weekend in Eastland with Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Linkengoger.
40 Years Ago March 18, 1982
Only one fire call has been made this past week. Minor damage was done to a kitchen caused by burning grease on stove. The fire was contained before extensive damage was done. One last statement: Let us know if you have a thought about the San Saba Volunteer Fire Department –– Good or Bad.
The San Saba Cattle Auction has been sold to the San Saba Commission, and had their first sale March 11. The new joint owners, Bud Harris, Tommy Kendricks, and Willie Adams, were there with family members from out of town to see the "first."
Ryan Heath Trevino celebrated his first birthday March 3 with a party hosted by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Trevino. A Teddy Bear cake and punch were served.
J. B. Perry was honored on his 101st birthday March 5 with a dinner at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. Glenda Ragland. His children and grandchildren hosted the occasion.
Kim Grumbles celebrated her 8th birthday March 5 with a party given by her mother, Mrs. Debra Collier, at their home. A Strawberry Shortcake decorated cake was served with punch and cookies.
The San Saba High School Vocational Office Careers Club participated in conferences and contest events March 10-11 in Dallas. Participants included Lupe Hernandez and Reta Pierce, bulletin board contestants, Betty Sue Fernandez, Susann Paredez, Rebecca Trevino, Maria Garcia (state qualifier), Elvira Coronado (stencil duplication), Cindy Jimenez, (spirit duplication competition). Patricia Herrington, was the groups advisor.
Artist Ron McGuffin tackled a big "canvas" this week...the side wall of Harry Shapiro's Ladies' Store. McGuffin, who was commissioned to do this Central Texas painting by San Saba National Bank, has done several murals in this area. When completed, this particular piece of art will sport local favorites such as cowboys, cattle and armadillos.
