100 Years Ago February 18, 1926
We have just learned that Richland Springs High School, our worthy opponent on many a well-fought battle field, is following our lead of issuing a school news sheet through a local paper. We are glad to see them do this, for we believe there is nothing of greater value in arousing in a school than that vital element known as “school spirit.” Teachers alone cannot make a school great. They are an important factor in it, ‘tis true, but a loyal, enthusiastic student body is the primary essential. - The Armadillo Echo - SSHS newsletter Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Brown of Pecan Grove left this week for Caddo where they will make their home.
J. D. Estep is having the front of his store re-painted this week. This gives the east side of the square a holiday appearance.
T. G. Edgin and family of Goldthwaite have moved to this city and are living in the T. Y. Elton house in the southern part of town.
At a meeting of the Sixth District Bankers Association in Brady two of San Saba popular bankers were signally honored. A. Horton was elected chairman and R. W. Burleson was chosen secretary for the ensuing term.
On Friday night the Risien Dance Pavilion opened in the hall on the San Saba river. The Watson Orchestra furnished music for the dancing. A crowded floor was present throughout the evening and the new pavilion seems to be popular among all of the young people.
30 Years Ago February 22, 1996
The biggest excitement in Richland Springs in the past week was over the weekend when someone tossed a big rock through the Post Office window and made a hole large enough to enter the Post Office. Several law officers were in town. The federal officers will handle the case, assisted by the local law.
Eva Arredondo from the 4th grade class placed 2nd at the Region XV media fair with her poster.
Jenna Jones placed 1st in the trampoline - level 4, and 3rd in tumbling - level 7 at the Wichita Fall gymnastics meet.
The San Saba Tennis Team traveled to Waco to play the Chifton Tournament. Mark Lewis led the Dillos by winning first place in Division I Boys Singles.
Mary Tanner, Jane Clark and LaNell Parrish were the hostesses for the Bend community meeting and they did a superb job of decorating the center with a red and white Valentine theme. Many thanks go to the ladies. The Mexican food was excellent, and no one complained about it being cold.
Charles Startz, Jr., and Lou Jerrie Goodman were married Feb. 9, 1946, in an informal ceremony at the First Baptist Church of San Saba. The couple recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They have resided in San Saba all of their married life, and Charley is a retired rancher.
