The new building under construction by Golding & Reid is rapidly being completed and will be one of the nicest buildings in this city. Everyone is waiting for the New Fords to arrive and we hope that by the time the new Ford Garage and Sales Service is opened to the public, there may be a showing a New Ford.
Pfc. Bill White of Camp Rucker was her on a 15-day furlough which he spent with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. L. White. He has been called to Fort Benjamin Harrison where he will enter school.
Robert Hickey, who is stationed on the Pacific Coast, is here on a furlough visiting his wife and little son in the home of their mother, Mrs. Fred Gunter.
Among the passenger list of the SS Queen Mary which arrived in New York last week is the name of Pfc. Bill H. Doran of San Saba.
Malcom Chism, who runs tourist camp at Gorman Falls, has bought a lot from Gene Buchanan near the Bend school building and is erecting a new residence. Mr. Chism has been living in the Skipper residence now owned by Mrs. Etheridge Doss.
70 Years Ago September 8, 1955
Some tomatoes of exceptionally fine quality, which were grown without irrigation in the Bethel community, were brought into the News office this week. They were grown by R. D. Standlee, who transplanted the vines in June. The variety used was “Break of Day.”
Mrs. W. H. Ponton attended the 78th birthday celebration of her brother, Fred Crouch, in Richland Springs.
Miss Grace Baxter is attending the gift market in Dallas to buy Christmas merchandise for her Quality Shoppe.
Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Tisdale and children, Herbie, Susie and Sam, returned home from a 10 day visit in Lubbock. While there, they attended the 88th birthday celebration of Mrs. Tisdale’s grandmother, Mrs. S. I. Johnston.
During a refreshment break, while older students exercise the swings, a long line of elementary school students, lead by their teachers, file across the grammar school campus toward the school lunch room for a penny bottle of milk to take the edge off mid-morning appetites on the first day of school in San Saba.
