100 Years Ago
June 18, 1925
H. H. Smith, working in the interest of the annual year book for the state game, fish and oyster department, has been here the past few days, and in company with deputy game commissioner E. T. Neal, has made an inspection of some of the beauty spots surrounding this city.
Fred’s Confectionery changed hands. John Haltmar took charge of this concern. Fred Townsend had established a nice little business, and John Haltmar decided he wanted it and a deal was at one consummated.
Under the supervision of city Marshall D. Chadwick, San Saba is undergoing a general clean up. All weeds are being cut from side streets and alleys and out of the way streets and alleys are being graveled.
Jake Petmecky has just returned to Austin from a fishing trip on the San Saba river in Menard county. Petmecky reports that that section of the country was in wonderful condition with the grass knee high, the cotton green and all chopped out, and the corn tasseling.

June 19, 1975
City and County fire trucks rushed to the Corral Drive-In theatre, June 13, afternoon to put out a grass fire in back of the parking area. Portions of tall green grass had dried sufficiently for wind blown flames to ignite the grass causing the fire to spread. San Saba volunteer firemen were able to contain the fire quickly and also doused the trash fire.
Rodeo weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Wharton were there children, Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Robinson of Austin and Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Kidd of Edinburg. The Robinsons also attended the 1965 class reunion and the Kidds were here for the wedding of his sister, Nancy Kidd and John Williamson.
Mrs. Annette Chadwick of Lometa has received word that her granddaughter, Katherine Rae Jordan, has arrived in Wertheim, Germany where she joined her husband Pfc. Richard W. Jordan.
Mr. and Mrs. Roland Hicks and family honored their fathers with a dinner on Father’s Day at their home. Others present were Mr. and Mrs. Bill Clark, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hicks, Kathy. Roxie and Danny Hicks, Mr. and Mrs. William Clark, Bobby, Danny and Boyd and Miss Jill Henniger.
James Davis, representing Walter’s Discount Foods, smacked a baseball to register the first hit and score the first run in the opening game of the Little League baseball season in San Saba. Walter’s went on to win over J. Miles Motors 9-7 at the baseball field in Mill Pond Park.
