100 Years Ago November 20, 1924
Many of the Algerita and Bethel people attended the Football game at Richland Springs between the latter and Brady. The score was 14-6 in favor of Richland Springs. The box supper brought $92.
Ney Gorman, the old-time Bend citizen is still able to get to the polls and voted for “Ma”. He is still about and bale to work down most any young man. He sold his famous pecan orchard crop to Alfred Fry and received $300 for same . These boys say the pecans are fine this year.
Tom Ketchum of Sloan is sporting a brand new Ford and he and his family made good use of it by visiting at Tom’s father at Ebony.
NOTICE TO TRAPPERS I wish to say to you that I am now located at the Smithwick Fur house to buy your furs. See me before you sell and get proper grading on your furs. Have had five years experience grading for a St. Louis house. C. M. Lindsey Mrs. Irene Gibson of little Bend school will stage an entertainment and box supper on the night of thanksgiving day, inst., for the benefit of our school. Mrs. Gibson is an enterprising teacher and she believes that a woman can make a governor of Texas, for she voted that way.
30 Years Ago November 24, 1994
Ralene Spinks’ fifth grade class hosted a traditional Thanksgiving Dinner for their parents, friends, and some of the school faculty. Ham, turkey, rolls, pies, cakes and cookies, along with plenty of the usual condiments, were served.
In Science, San Saba fifth graders got to build moon bases on computers. They were really excited about their creations. Six graders are learning about the planets and creating commercials for scenic trips to Mars, Jupiter, Pluto, etc.
The 1994-95 San Saba Head Start class participated in a Mini-Walk-A-Thon for asthma. The students walked laps around the school yard and were paid by sponsors for each lap. They collected $500 for the American Lung Association. The children will receive an award, T-shirt and prizes.
The San Saba Headstart parent officers elected for 1994 are Sarah Saldivar, Policy Council Rep; Naomi Saucillo, Vice President; Jennifer Thompson, Treasurer: Mary Gil, President; Angie Martin, Secretary. These parents will be conducting the parent meetings and any activities throughout the year.
The new roof on the Burleson Bank building is becoming a reality. Wayne Gossett and his crew began tearing out the old skylight and preparing for the new roof. Some Christmas in the future I would like to see the old building outlined with tiny white Christmas lights and then perhaps the rest of the town. Maybe even caroling on the old bank steps. ––Nona The San Saba sixth grade Economics Fair was a huge success with happy customers and “almost wealthy” entrepreneurs. We sold everything from pet rocks, to stilts, to cupcakes and candy.
