80 Years Ago August 3, 1944

Capt. James Dailey, son of Dr. and Mrs. J. L. Dailey, flew a B-24 to England about two weeks ago. He volunteered for the service as a pilot soon after Pearl Harbor. Capt. Dailey left from Peterson Field, Colo. Mrs. Dailey and sons will make their home in San Antonio for the duration.

Jim Watkins is having the interior of the Bank Barber Shop repainted.

A. J. Blanton is now the manager of the Palace Theater, succeeding D. J. Spieckerman, who has gone to Belton. Mr. Blanton will be in San Saba temporarily before his transfer to Gonzales, where he will manage he Griffith Theater there.

Cecil and Jonnie’s Eat Shop across from the Palace Theater has added a modern air conditioner to their equipment and now their cafe is comfortably cooled during the hot days.

The Colorado River came down a red rise about 15 feet, killing many fish.

C. R. Morton has bought the grocery and station, formerly known as Dad’s Place, and recently owned by L. B. Wood, on the Llano Highway and will operate the business as Morton’s Grocery & Station. A complete line of groceries, octane gasoline and Graham motor oil will be sold. Mr. Morton formerly operated Morton’s One Stop on the Llano Highway.

30 Years Ago August 3, 1994

Virginia Gonzales of San Saba has been awarded a Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential in recognition of outstanding work with young children. The credential was awarded by the Council of Early Children Professional Recognition in Washington, D.C., which represents the early childhood profession.

Dr. Carpernter was in Richland Springs to give physicals to the freshmen and sixth graders of our school. RN Grace Gibson took blood pressure, pulses, heights and weights. Dr. Carpenter also did the bus drivers’ physicals.

Patsy Trotter went to Prague, Czech Republic this summer to visit her son and daughter-inlaw, Alan and Kindra Trotter who reside there.

Fill and Mittie Mabry Vaughn along with their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren will be celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary. They were married August 6, 1929 in San Saba under the large oak tree, (the Wedding Oak) on China Creek Road. They made San Saba their home until 1952, then moving to Ft. Worth, Texas.

The Richland Springs varsity cheerleaders attended NCA cheerleader camp in July. They returned home with 1 safety award, 2 spirit stick certificate winners, 5 superior ribbons, 2 excellent ribbons, and the Top Team Award trophy. The squad members are: Shawna Miller, April Moreno, Sally Cowen, Rhonda Sanchez, Candi Lusty, Tana Lewis and Diedra Reeves.
