Mrs. Hattie Richards received a V-Mail letter this week from Lt. R. C. Brown, stating he was well and that was more than most of his buddies could say. R. C. is somewhere in the Southwest Pacific.
We had the pleasure of being at the J. R. Polk's 91st birthday celebration on the 4th inst. Misses May and Lex Polk, together with their sisters, Mmes. Jym Sloan, Ward Holmon and Louis Bryan, were the reception committee, and they practically received guests all day.
The many friends of Minister W. E. Brown are proud to learn that he is the new clerk at the Walter Hendrick's grocery. He has accepted the position made vacant by Berny Pearce, who has joined the forces of Uncle Sam.
Well, the Bend Telephone Company has a new operator, Mr. and Mrs. H. Shipman, who have taken over. Mr. Estes, the manager of the United Telephone Co., met the directors of the Bend Co. to recondition the switchboard. There is considerable needed work laid out ahead in repairs and the construction of a line to the Rough Creek community, repairs on the Colony line, the office building at Bend is to be repaired and painted.
Work has begun on clearing the frame building from the lot on the southeast corner of the square next door to the Arhelger Machine Shop to make space for a future modern fireproof building when materials are available. John W. Arhelger already has the plans drawn for a modern machine shop building and plans to locate it on the corner lot which he is now having cleared.
Pvt. Charles E. Angerstein of Camp Gruber, Okla., arrived in San Saba for a 11-day furlough for a visit with his sister, Mrs. W. E. Holliday, and family. Pvt. Angerstein is a company aide with the medical corps at Camp Gruber and has been in the army seven months.

Thomas Bowden, County Judge and Sheriff Brantley Barker recently received a certificate from the Texas Commission on Jail Standards, stating that the last inspection of the San Saba County Jail had found it without deficiencies and that it had been re-certified. The jail was built in 1884 and is 100 years old this year making it the oldest public building in San Saba County and the oldest jail to be certified.
Arnulfo Cisneroz of San Saba was listed as a Distinguished Student on the 1983 fall semester honor roll at Tarleton State University. Arnulfo, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lupe Cisneroz, was valedictorian of the 1982 graduating class of San Saba High School.
San Saba County is one of 72 in Texas recently named by Secretary of Agriculture John R. Block as eligible for loans to cover part of actual production loss resulting from the drought.
Mr. and Mrs. Sam Pirozzo of Dallas announce the birth of their first child on January 23. The baby, a girl, was named Alison Ann. She weighed 8 pounds, 3 ounces and measured 20 ½ inches in length. Alison Ann's mother is the former Alice Rodriguez, daughter of the late Fred and Frances Rodriguez of San Saba Sam Murray was recently named Vice-President of City National Bank of San Saba. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Pat Murray of San Saba, he is the fourth generation Murray to have served in the bank. Murray and his family moved to San Saba from Georgetown where he was assistant Vice-President, Credit Operations and member of the Loan Committee.
Employees of Super S Foods and local dignitaries including County Judge Thomas Bowden, Chamber of Commerce Secretary, Maureen Huffman and San Saba Administrator, James Reavis, attended the Ribbon Cutting marking the Grand Opening of the newly remodeled supermarket in San Saba. Mayor Joe Ragsdale cut the Ribbon.
