What Kind of Heart Do You Have?
We have weeds in our yard. I’m not talking about grass, but weeds that I can’t seem to get rid of. What do you do with weeds? How do you get rid of them? They are just one big nuisance.
Weeds have a way of crowding out the good things around it. If you try to kill the weed, there is a chance you will also kill the grass or vegetables (if they are in a garden).
In Luke chapter 8, Jesus tells a parable. A farmer had sown seed. This seed landed on different kinds of soils. Some seed fell by the road, some on rocky soil, other seed fell among the thorns while others fell on good soil, (Luke 8:5-8)
Later that day, His disciples asked Him about the parable. In this parable, we find that the seed that was sown is the Word of God. (Luke 8:11) The soil would be representative of the different kinds of hearts God’s Word falls on.
There are some people who do not want anything to do with the Word of God—the Bible. When it is presented to them, the devil takes it away, and they will not believe and be saved. There are others who are moved to respond, and for a while are and excited about their Christianity. But because they have no roots (are not grounded), when temptations come, they fall away. Then, some are so tied to this world that they are more concerned with what it has to offer. Jesus said these were worries, riches and pleasures of this life. But the seed that fell on the good soil produced abundantly.
I pray that you are not one who shuns the Word of God. And I pray that when you do hear and believe and obey the Word you will stay excited about being God’s child. And I pray that your heart is not overly worried and that you are not more concerned about riches and the pleasure that this world affords.
But I do pray as well that your heart is bringing forth abundant fruit for our God. I do know this—every person fits one of these categories. It is up to us to determine which one we fall into, and then if it is not the latter one, to make the necessary changes. Why? Because Jesus is coming again, and we all need to be prepared to meet Him.
