First There Were Two. . . Then There Were Many

George H. Brister married Jessie Jewel Fox on March 17, 1918 in the Pecan Grove Community of San Saba County. One hundred years later, their descendants and special friends gathered for the annual Brister Family Reunion, June 29-July 1, 2018, at Rough Creek Ranch between San Saba and Bend.

This year's event was hosted by the Jackie Brister family, which included Jackie and Charlene Brister; Micheal, Gennifer, Dillon and Dean Brister of Bend; Gene and Janet Brister; Lauren, Joe and Tres Rodriguez, and Blain Adams of Palacios, TX; Ryan Brister of Houston; Rose Elizabeth Adams and Joe and Jacklyn Tamez of Waco; Marilyn Brister and Carl Adams of Dublin, TX; and Shari and Steve Raesz of Cherokee (recently, Dripping Springs, TX).

Tony Booth & Darrell McCall return to the Llano Opry

The Llano Country Opry will be staged on Saturday, July 14, at the Lantex Theater in Llano, Texas. Tickets are now on sale at www.heartoftexascountry.com or by calling (325) 247-5354. Admission is $15.00 per person and the show begins at 7:30 P.M. Darrell McCall and Tony Booth will be featured. McCall and Booth will do a set of their solo hits and then they join each other for some selections off of their Survivors album that also featured the late Curtis Potter.

In 1959, McCall was contacted by Nashville producer Buddy Killen, and asked to join a pop band he was forming called The Little Dippers. The band released the top ten pop hit "Forever" in 1960. The next year, McCall was signed by Capitol Records as a solo singer releasing two singles.

Millican Reunion held July 7 at Civic Center

Some 42 family and friends met for the annual Millican Family Reunion on Saturday, July 7th, at the San Saba Civic Center. Descendants of Mose, Miles and Joe Millican were present.

From the Mose Millican family: Gail Callahan, Pat and Bonnie Millican, Geoffrey and Lindsay Millican, Henry and Jack Millican, Sam Strouhal and friend Hattie, Brian and Bailey Strouhal and daughter, Annabelle.

Colorado Bend State Park to have limited day use hours August 4th

On Saturday, August 4, 2018, the 13th Annual Capt'n Karl's Trail Race will take place at Colorado Bend State Park beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday and ending at 7:00 a.m. on Sunday morning. The Capt'n Karl's Trail Race includes a 10K, 30K and 60K race during this event at the park.

The race will begin and end in the Spicewood Springs Day Use Area and will not have any available space for additional Day Use visitors to the park.

Channel 6 promotes new Morning, Evening, and Weekend Anchor Lineup

TEMPLE, TX – Channel 6 has officially named long-time Texas Today morning anchor Kris Radcliffe, weekend anchor Chris Rogers, and Channel 6 reporter Emani Payne to new positions.

The shift follows a months-long retooling of the Channel 6 newscasts, including new graphics and features to make information clearer and more accessible to viewers. This includes new segments such as ‘Verify,’ where viewer questions and online rumors are investigated, sources vetted, and facts verified to bring the truth to Central Texans. Speaking of viewers, Channel 6 has now rolled out a new feature called ‘Megaphone,’ where viewers are asked to respond to hot-button issues, and serves as the viewer’s voice in our nightly newscasts.

County Judge’s Update

It is widely accepted, I might go as far as to say undisputed, that time and effort spent teaching youth yields the greatest benefits for both the youth and the community. We are privileged to have Neil Alexander and his work as Extension Agent, but we certainly feel the vacancy that Melanie Potter’s departure has created. We hope that the A&M Extension Service can soon fill her position.

2018 CTC Police Academy graduates

The Central Texas College (CTC) Police Academy held a graduation ceremony June 2, 2018 at the Anderson Campus Center for cadets completing the 19-week, 720-hour Basic Peace Officer course. Many of the 20 graduating cadets were affiliated with a law enforcement agency while several were self-sponsored. All of the cadets passed the state licensing exam prior to graduation with an average score of 87.6, and are now qualified to become peace officers in Texas. The class average for the entire course was 92.

The San Saba Sew-N-Sews hosted a Quilter’s Round-Up on June 2nd at Parkview Baptist Church. Pictured here are a few of the featured quilts. Quilts were placed on the pews for display. Each lady shared a story about the quilt she brought.

Ellis and Rollins Announce Engagement

Kayla Delaine Ellis and Chance Rollins are announcing their engagement. Kayla is the daughter of Roger Ellis of San Saba and Loretta Lewis of Colorado City. Chance is the son of Wistie and Danny Ellis of Plainview and Michel Rollins of Snyder. Kayla is a 2014 graduate of Texas Tech University and is currently a school counselor for Mullin ISD. Chance is also a Texas Tech graduate and is employed by Dufrane Rail Services. An autumn wedding is planned, and the couple is looking forward to making their home in Abilene, Texas.
