San Saba High School Cheer named UIL State Spirit Runner Up

By Elizabeth Chambers

The San Saba High School Cheerleaders attended the UIL State Sprit Championships in Ft. Worth on January 11, 2018. The contest consists of three preliminary rounds in Band Dance, Crowd-Leading Cheer and Fight Song. The girls competed against 38 other schools for an opportunity to enter the top 20 for the final round. The girls ended up 17th overall in the preliminary rounds. However, in the final round, the Game Day Performance, scores are started over. The girls have 3 minutes to present a true game day sideline performance. After prelims, our girls worked on getting a threeminute performance perfected for the final Game Day Competition. They must perform their band dance, react to an announced situation and respond with the correct offense or defense cheer, execute their crowd-leading cheer and end with their fight song.

The Texas Rangers and the San Saba Mob

Submitted by Ross J. Cox, Sr.

SELECTED PASSAGES FROM VOLUME I

Editor’s Note – Part 25 in a continuing series.

Soon thereafter McCarty haunted the Ranger camp. The old man finally gave in as his conscience could stand it no more. He told all he knew and made a full confession to Mc- Donald. In a letter to Mabry on 26 September 1897, McDonald Wrote:

Another one of the Mob has unfolded to me and made affidavit to it, of the signs, passwords and of the murder of Jim Brown and who he says was killed by the Mob. He testified for Bill Ogle in the examining trial and stated things that were not true, but he says he was made to do it and that he would be killed by them if he refused to obey their bidding. But that it had been worrying him so badly that he thinks he would die. And he unfolded everything and that as he had got a chance to tell on them or loose his place and probably his life.

Lady Dillo Basketball Report

Submitted by Alicia Cummings

The Lady Dillos picked up two more District wins this week as they defeated Harper and Center Point. First up, the Lady Dillos hit the road as they traveled to Harper on Tuesday night. We knew Harper would play with a lot of energy and we needed to match their intensity in their own house. The Lady Dillos started off with great disciplined defense and this rattled Harper from the start. The Lady Longhorns would only be able to score 8 points in the 1st half and the Lady Dillos took a 21-8 lead into halftime. In the 2nd half, the Lady Dillos moved the ball well against Harper’s zone and they were able to heat up on the offensive end. The Lady Dillos would go on to defeat Harper by a final score of 45-23. I was really pleased with the way our girls executed our game plan. I felt like they did a great job on both sides of the ball and played really well as a team. It was a very good road win for us.

Challenges of Childhood…

By Dr. Don Newbury

Childhood illnesses in the mid-20th Century were rarely treated by physicians who practiced medicine. Instead, mothers practiced home remedies with abandon.

Many among us can remember times when the treatment was worse than the illness, as well as accompanying psychological damage that won’t let go.

The Bend News

By Jo Price

Mother nature is going to really give us some bad weather this week.

They are already posting weather alerts on the TV Monday. It would be wise for everyone to stock up on groceries and what ever else you might need before the bad stuff hits. Make sure your pets have a warm place to stay.
