A Word from Wayne

It is a great day to be a Dillo! School has officially started. Let wisdom and knowledge pour forth into the thirsty minds of our students. Just like our county needs rain, our students need school. I could not be prouder of our teachers and staff. They have shown up ready to teach!

Starting back to school in a normal year is hectic, but during a pandemic it is even more so. The amount of preparation, protocol and regulations only add to the workload. If you get a chance, let your teachers and staff know that you appreciate them. A thank you note or “virtual” pat on the back or thumbs up is a simple way to honor our staff. Honor is something we often take for granted in society.

The Bible tells us to honor our mothers and fathers, and it says, 1 Timothy 5:17, that elders who rule well are worthy of double honor. Honor and respect can often be used interchangeably. What would double respect be? This pandemic has created many unforeseen challenges, and we have had to ask much of our teachers, parents, and students. We have asked that you wear face coverings. Please respect and honor our request. It is a simple thing, but it makes a big difference when someone tests positive - and they will test positive. We have also asked people to self-monitor their health and their child’s health. If a child is sick or feverish, please do not send them to school.

Season ticket sales and away games sales have been a challenge. In our haste to try and get professional looking tickets made, we neglected to get specific tickets for specific games. All the tickets are the same. Some fans have indicated that they may try to duplicate tickets and give the fakes to extra family members. Some have indicated that they may not go to all the home games and use their excess tickets so they can have more people for homecoming.

We would ask that you honor the participants by using your ticket for the games you purchased them for. Gaming the system is dishonorable. If you are unable to go to a game that you purchased a ticket for, why not bless someone with a free ticket?

We do believe that we should be able to accommodate our home game fans in our stadium. There is no need to panic, and our numbers so far indicate that anyone who wants to attend a home game in person should be able to do so.

One of the things that I was proudest of during last year’s season were the comments I received from opposing team’s superintendents. Those district leaders essentially said that we treated their teams and fans with respect and honor. That is quite a statement from teams that got beat by 50 points. If we conduct ourselves with respect and honor towards our opponents, should we not respect and honor ourselves? People who do so are called honorable. Some say “Keep Austin Weird,” let us “Keep San Saba Honorable.”

“Attitude is a choice. Happiness is a choice. Optimism is a choice. Kindness is a choice. Giving is a choice. Respect is a choice. Whatever choice you make, makes you. Choose wisely.” ― Roy T. Bennett, The Light in the Heart.

Go Dillos!
