Quanah Parker Day Celebration

Body
Saturday, September 12, 2020, is the second annual Quanah Parker Day in Texas. This year, a statewide Virtual Celebration is being streamed on Quanah-ParkerDay.com website all day Saturday, September 12, honoring the life of the iconic Comanche leader Quanah Parker. He led the last band of Comanches from their nomadic way of life as hunters to settle in a specific place and "learn the white man's way,"1 thus opening the vast region of Comancheria that had been dominated by the Comanches for more than a century to a flood of white settlers.

Beware of Sleeping Dogs

Body
You cannot really tell the real nature of a dog when he is sleeping. Over the years, I have walked up to many yard fences or knocked on many a door, and I have learned to look very carefully to see if there is a dog there. There may be, and he may be sleeping very peacefully. But you go in the yard, and halfway to the front door the dog awakens. And that sleeping dog becomes a roaring, snarling lion, and it is getting harder for me to run like a speeding train or leap over yard fences.

Our Life is Like a Junk Drawer...

Body
When cleaning out a junk drawer, the most effective (though rarely used) method is asking the honest question about each item: "Is this actually something that I use, and am not holding onto just because I can't bear to throw it away?" If done honestly, you are left with a few very useful things that are much easier to access, as well as room for additional genuinely useful things. The stress is gone if you can bear to part with all the useless junk.

Hope in the Middle of it All

Body
Hope in the midst of adversity is like rain in the middle of the summer heat. The gathering of the clouds and the change of wind indicate something good is going to happen. Rain is a gift from the Lord. It is His blessing upon the land, wildlife and man. It is an act of mercy that He sends because He loves us. It is a gift of grace that comes undeserved. Our hearts should overflow with gratitude when God blesses the earth with rain.

The Richland Springs Report

Body
All the big rains have circled around the San Saba and Richland Springs area, but we have had a few tenths to water our trees. I am looking for one of those four-inch rains. I fear we are going to lose many more trees this winter. They just have no strength left to hold on to life.

Local employers encouraged to contact HPU Career Services to fill position openings

Body
In an effort to promote the safety of students, personnel and surrounding communities, Howard Payne University’s Office of Career Services will not host a face-to-face part-time job and internship fair during the 2020 fall semester. Instead, career services personnel will focus on connecting employers with qualified students on an individual basis.

Hill Country Naturalist

Body
We started building our house in 2000, and at the time the Blackjack oak, about 30 feet off the south end, was not remarkable, although not quite as big as the other Blackjacks around us. A couple of years after we moved in, we noticed it was showing signs of hypoxylon with the bark sloughing off the upper branches. Then one night in about 2004 or 2005, the entire top broke off in a windstorm about 12 feet up the one-foot diameter trunk.
