They Had a Dream

This Saturday will be our nation’s 244th birthday.

The founders of our country had lived for centuries under tyrannical rulers. They had little or no freedoms and had to do whatever the kings and rulers wanted. They were heavily taxed and lived in great turmoil among their rulers or neighboring kingdoms.

The founders wanted or had the dream of a place to live where they could be free and make their own decisions about government. It was not just one person deciding what kind of country and government they would have. They met many times and had many lengthy discussions and did not always agree. They finally came to a workable agreement and our country was founded.

They declared their independence, and we became a new nation in 1776. They believed every person had some God given basic rights and freedoms, and that every person should have a say so in what happens in our governments, the right to vote.

Yes, we can have a say so, and yes, that right has been passed down to us. If we choose not to vote, we can lose that wonderful freedom. Someone else is going to decide what happens to us and our government.

This holiday, let us enjoy our country's birthday and its freedoms and our freedom to worship God the way we choose, not the government or just a few dictating what we must do. See you in church next Sunday.
