Lady Dillos Hoops cruises past Sabinal, Freer in 2A Playoffs

The San Saba High School girls varsity basketball team began its quest for a state championship title this past week as the Lady Dillos picked up dominant wins over Sabinal High School and Freer High School.

San Saba Lady Dillos 94, Sabinal Lady Yellowjackets 28

After a week-long delay due to the severe winter storm that came through Texas, the Lady Dillos finally got to take the court again on Friday, February 19th, as San Saba throttled Sabinal 94-28 in the 2A Bi-District Playoffs at neutral site Johnson City High School.

The Lady Dillos continued to dominate the Lady Yellowjackets throughout the second quarter and took a commanding 46-11 lead into halftime. San Saba showed off some great passing, hit a vast majority of its highpercentage shots, established a balanced scoring attack, and the Lady Dillos’ team defense forced countless Sabinal turnovers as well as ill-advised shots.

San Saba head coach Alicia Cummings’ squad had four players score in double figures: senior forward Courtnee Cash led the way with a game-high 19 points, senior guard Brighton Adams with 15 points, junior guard Jaedah Lambert with 13 points, and junior forward Landri Glover had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Junior forward Nojemi Martinez and sophomore guard Lexy Amthor were both solid off the bench and finished with eight and five points, respectively.

San Saba Lady Dillos 58, Freer Lady Buckaroos 41

San Saba got off to a bit of a slow start offensively on February 20th in the 2A Area Playoffs in San Antonio, but they did a great job at constantly keeping Freer at bay with a commanding lead throughout the afternoon enroute to a 58-41 victory.

The Freer Lady Buckaroos, who were the District 32-2A champions this season, were outplayed from start to finish as the Lady Dillos capitalized on errors and turned them into points at the other end of the floor.

Cash again led the way for San Saba with a game-high 17 points, while Adams added 14 points of her own to complete a great one-two punch for the Lady Dillos. Lambert and Glover also had eight points apiece, while sophomore guard Madison Shahan came off the bench and had a solid game with six points.

The Lady Dillos will play District 29-2A rival Harper High School this week in the quarterfinals at a date and time still to be announced.

Dillos Basketball holds on for win over La Pryor in Bi-District

The San Saba High School boys varsity basketball team got off to a fast start in the first half and was able to hold on for a 58-46 victory on Saturday, February 20th, against La Pryor High School in the 2A Bi-District Playoffs held at Paul Taylor Fieldhouse in San Antonio.

Against the Bulldogs, the Dillos got off to a superb start behind 18 first-half points from San Saba junior guard Reagan Mejia. As he has done for much of the 2020-21 season, Mejia’s ability to shoot the ball well from behind the arc benefitted the Dillos greatly.

Leading 38-17 at halftime and by as many as 25 points early in the third quarter, the Dillos began to get sloppy in the second half as they let the Bulldogs trim the lead to just 48-36 at the end of the third quarter.

San Saba really got a scare in the fourth quarter as an inspired underdog La Pryor team got hot from three-point range, cutting the Dillos’ lead to just 48-43 with a few minutes remaining in regulation.

However, that was as close as the Bulldogs got the rest of the way as the Dillos tightened up on defense, made timely shots down the stretch, and hit some clutch free throws.

Dillos senior forward Logan Glover was a force to be reckoned within the paint and finished with 15 points, while fellow senior guard Risien Shahan and forward C.J. Greenwell had themselves solid games with 10 and nine points in the afternoon, respectively.

San Saba head coach Mark Kyle and his Dillos squad, now possessing a 17-4 overall record, head into the 2A Area Playoffs and will play either Premont High School or Yorktown High School this week.
