Monday, June 29th, marked the beginning of early voting for the runoff between two Republican seats. One is for State Representative - District 59 - between incumbent, Dr. J.D. Sheffield (R-Gatesville) and Shelby Slawson, a practicing attorney from Stephenville, Texas. The second runoff is for the State Board of Education, District 5 seat and poses Lani Popp against Robert Morrow.

The early voting setup is located at the courthouse on the second floor. After Tuesday, you can vote Wednesday and Thursday from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Friday, July 3rd, is a federal holiday and the courthouse will be closed. Early voting will continue the same hours the following week, July 6th through July 10th.

Primary Runoff Election Day is Tuesday, July 14th. Everyone voting on election day will go to First Baptist Church in San Saba. Poll or voting hours that day will be 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.

The outcome of the runoff election between Dr. J.D. Sheffield and Shelby Slawson will determine the State Representative - District 59 since no Democrats or Independents are running in the November election. Slawson, who is a business owner and practicing attorney in Erath county, received 46% of the votes in the March Republican Pri mary, while Dr. Sheffield received 30%, and Cody Johnson, a third candidate, received 24% of the votes. In Texas, if no candidate receives more than 50% of the votes cast, then a runoff election is required.

Robert Morrow collected 40% of the votes in the Republican Primary, while Lani Popp, public school speech pathologist, received 34% of votes. A third candidate had 26% of the votes. Morrow or Popp, whoever wins, will face Rebecca Bell-Metereau, a Texas State University professor, in the November election (https://www.statesman.com/news/20200304/robert-morrow-lani-popp-head-to-state-education-race-runoff).
