July 4, 1940

Two San Saba girls, Misses Ruth Harbuck and Julia Ann Wade recently, appeared on the first student music recital of the summer series at Texas State College for Women. Both were members of a sextet which sang the Scotch folk song, "Turn Ye to Me," Bortniasnsky's "Lo, a Voice to Heaven Sounding," and Kriens' "How Sweet the Answer Echo Makes." Both girls are students of Dr. William E. Jones, professor of voice and Director of the Department of Music at the college.

Mr. L. Bagley, John Hall, Worth Jones and Gene Nored spent Saturday and Sunday at Buchanan Dam fishing.

Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Harris have as guest their daughter, Miss Louise Harris, who is attending a commercial school in Austin.

Mr. and Mrs. Walter Lange of Field Creek were among the visitors here last week.

Miss Perky Behrens has a position with the Dooley Store.

Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Williams had as guests here last week Mrs. C. H. Shook and 18-month-old baby, Vera Lee, of Edna and Mrs. Adrian Griffin and son, Floyd Fernel, of Brownwood.

A wedding, beautiful in its simplicity, took place Monday morning at eight o'clock in the home of the bride's parents in San Saba when I. A. (Ace) Howell was united in marriage to Miss Elaine Doran, youngest of the two daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Worth R. Doran, in the presence of the members of the immediate families of the two and a few close friends. The Rev. Willard Anders, a near friend of the groom and whose home is in Thrall, read the marriage lines for the single ring ceremony.

July 7, 1960

Sheriff Brantley Barker located the 1950 Chevrolet sedan stolen from Frank Clamp here on Monday, June 27, near midnight, at San Angelo. He and Clamp went to San Angelo Saturday, July 2, to recover the car. It was found parked in front of the Sears, Roebuck & Co. store there. Sheriff Barker stated that the car had not been damaged and Clamp drove the car back to San Saba.

Nothing makes a woman look so old and creaky, no matter how few her years, than to walk along with bent knees. For a lithe and youthful look, walk from the hips with legs straight. Check up on yourself now. Most likely you'll discover that a good part of the time, you're walking with bent knees.

For safety's sake, don't let children play on the lawn while you are mowing.

Richard Barker and Larry Don Burke, who were winners in the Brownwood Jaycees Invitational Tennis Tournament last month, left with the other Brownwood winners Wednesday afternoon for the State Meet to be held July 7-9 at San Antonio. Barker won the singles in the Brownwood Tournament and teamed up with Bourke to win the doubles.

The San Saba softball team was defeated 2 to 0 by the Fort Hood soldiers at Killeen Friday night, July 1. Woodrow Riggs, team manager, reported Saturday. "It was a good game in spite of our team's defeat," Riggs stated. Players on the team include Joe Botello, catcher; Marvin Riggs, first base; James Reavis, second base; Toney Keeny, second base; Dillard Brown, third base; Mauro Botello, short stop; Wayne Gatliff, left field; Larry Hibler, center field; Clarence Garrison, right field; Ward Randolph, pitcher; Denny Riggs, Walter Lewis, and Woodrow Riggs, manager. The team members have colorful suits of gold and green.
