The San Saba Garden Club held its first meeting of the 2020- 21 year on September 1st. To better observe social distancing and safe practices, members and guests gathered at the local Civic Center for refreshments and an overview of the coming year’s activities.

Hostesses Dianna Furlan (chair), Rebecca Britton, and Teri Dickey served delicious fresh fruit cups, mini quiches, and an assortment of homemade cookies. Each portion was hygienically wrapped in cellophane. The beverage was bottled water. The club extends a special thanks to the hostesses for the extra time and effort taken to observe health precautions.

Rhonda Killion, co-president with Mona McMahan, presided over the business meeting. Following introduction of guests and new members, treasurer Marjean Henderson presented a financial report. Members then discussed topics including the Club’s ongoing charitable activities; its community service projects such as maintaining gardens at the Senior Center, the elementary school, and the local nursing home; and its anticipated monthly programs and outings.

Becky Moore read thank you notes from Victor Patino and Jackson Nelson, recipients of Club college scholarships for the 2019-20 calendar year.

Sharon Hayes, a member since 1976, was formally recognized as the Garden Club’s first member emeritus.

This year’s theme is “Planting for Pollinators,” and clubgoers look forward to expert advice from guest speakers as the year progresses. The October meeting will be a day trip to Hill Country Water Garden and Nursery in Cedar Park. In addition to touring the lovely facility, members will be given presentations on adding water features to yards and gardens, creating hanging baskets, and building succulent bowls.

Congratulations to Donna Baxter, guest of Marjean Henderson, who won the guest door prize of an oversized watering can containing a lovely arrangement of brown-eyed Susans and greenery.

Club membership is not limited to residents of San Saba. If you are interested in beautifying your own lawn and/or your community with nature’s botanical wonders, we warmly invite you to join the Garden Club. It’s a wonderful chance to develop friendships, increase your gardening expertise, participate in social activities, and serve your community alongside like-minded citizens.
