Some years ago The News installed an open press with a Miller automatic feed attachment, but it was found that this equipment did not fill the firm's need. The News is open to visitors at all times; however it is preferred that visits be made during the latter part of the week when the office personnel is not too busy with the weekly paper to devote some time to showing visitors through the printing plant.

When traffic is diverted over the new route on Highway 190 sometime next fall, George B. Walker of Algerita expects to be ready for business in his new store now nearing completion. A new residence is just to the west of the store. Walker's old store, in which he has done business since 1928, is located on the present route of Highway 190 a few hundred yards north of the new structures, and will be practically isolated by the highway switch.

THE CITY NATIONAL BANK presents Interesting Facts About Texas. Barbed Wire Fence-In 1876, John W. Gates, a young drummer, sold barbed wire to the ranchers of Texas. In San Antonio the cattlemen laughed at him. In response to their jibes, Gates fenced in a city plaza and called for the "worst fence busters" of the herds. The cattle charged the wire as was expected but their hides were pierced by the barbs. They soon retired. Barbed wire came into use throughout the range area in 1883. Strife arose between cattlemen and fence-cutting became general. In some counties feeling ran so high that there was threat of civil warfare. An act of Legislature, together with the Texas Rangers, ended the strife.

April 25, 1974

The Annual Junior Senior Banquet was held in the Cafetorium, Saturday, April 20, with Dick Davenport, Junior Class President, giving the welcome and Richard Johnson, Senior Class President expressing appreciation. Theme of the banquet was Welcome to My World." The prophesy was read by Pam Emmons and the last will and testament by Rod Schoenbacher. District Judge Jack Miller was guest speaker.

The Family Living Committee of San Saba County is sponsoring a program called "The Heart -- Diet and Exercise." It will be held on Tuesday, April 30 beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Community Building in Mill Pond Park. "Because of many heart diseases, the committee feels that this type of program will be informative and helpful to all," writes Bernice Murray, San Saba County Extension Agent.

Three "Sweethearts" were named recently at San Saba High School. Shirley French was named DECA Sweetheart, Kathy Perry, VICA Sweetheart and Barbara Bailey, Track Sweetheart.

Times are getting rough, was the opinion of a local market owner. It was brought to his attention by a local shopper that one of the rings of sausage in his display case was a bit deformed -- or should we say bite deformed. Someone had taken a bite out of the sausage links. From the evidence we would conclude the villain was hungry and had a good set of teeth. 26 Years Ago

Joni Stewart and Emily Harkey were named to the All-Star Cast at the district one-act play contest for their performances in The Barretts of Wimpole Street. The competition was held in Albany on March 29.

Samuel Preece and Angela Cobb received Honorable Mention All-Star Cast for their performances in The Barretts of Wimpole Street, presented in district one-act play competition in Albany on March 29.

Richland Springs FFA member T. Noel Wood, III recently exhibited his heavyweight Barrow at the 1994 San Antonio Livestock Show, placing second in his weight class and third overall in the carcass contest.

John L. Whitney and Tommy Singelton of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) plant several bur oak and Texas pistachio trees along the roadways and in various locations in San Saba County. The trees, provided by IGA Groceries, Coca Cola, and Louisiana Pacific Corp., were planted at the request of San Saba Garden Club. Theresa Ketchum, manager of the Modern Way Grocery, said the seedlings are provided annually and are well suited to the climate and soil condition of the county.

Kosher Supervisor, Rabbi Sam Pollak of Houston along with Cecil Jones, Plant Manager of San Saba Pecan Inc., inspected the plant on April 13, and upon inspection the Rabbi renewed the certification that all grades of pecans produced at the San Saba Pecan Incorporated plant in San Saba are kosher and parve.
