2020 Pecan Valley District annual Cuboree held Saturday, October 10th, in Risien Park

The Pecan Valley District, Texas Trails Council, Boy Scouts of America is made up of Scouts and Scouters who live in Brown, Coleman, Mills, Lampasas and San Saba counties. This past Saturday, October 10th, Boy Scouts and their leaders spent the weekend at Risien Park to prepare, run and supervise the annual Cuboree event held from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. that day.

Cubmaster Randal Hawkins invited me to attend this event to see how hard the Cubs work, but also to enjoy watching them learn and have fun while learning!! I came away wishing both of my sons had joined Cub and Boy Scouts when they were younger.

Since the Cubs were spread out at different activities, it was hard to tell the attendance rate. Cubmaster Hawkins put me in touch with Scoutmaster James Lemond from Troup 14 in Brownwood, who gave me the following stats:

• Troup 55 San Saba - 5 Scouts

• Troup 55 San Saba - 7 Cubs

• Troup 4 Early - 2 Cubs

• Troup 14 Brownwood - 1 Cub

• Troup 255 Kileen - 5 Cubs

• Troup 100 Lampasas - 14 Cubs

• Troup 90 Kempner - 13 Cubs; and

• Troup 200 Lampasas - 6 Cubs.

Each of the activities were taped off for easier view and for everyone’s safety. At each event, a Cub was supervised by a Scout in performing the activity.

As each Pack completed an activity, they moved on to the next. In my mind, I though the Cubs were just learning for fun. However, Cubmaster Hawkins handed me a card that showed each activity and explained that as every Cub performs the activity, the instructor signs off on the card that it was completed. The Cub then turns his card in at the next meeting to their leader who signs off these activities which count towards rank.

Well, I can tell you I certainly had a fun day just watching all of the Cubs and Scouts at the event. By the way, the Scouts were having fun but were working towards
