2019 Regional Pecan Show Results

The Central Region Pecan Show was held in College Station on January 10, 2020. Judges were Dr. George Ray McEachern, Mr. Bill Ree, retired IPM specialist for pecans, and Mr. Stephen Janak. There were 162 entries, representing 13 Texas counties in the Central, Central West and Southwest districts. The Central Regional show was up this year in number of entries. It is an accomplishment that there were good pecans harvested and submitted to county shows this year.

City Council holds Public Hearing and Regular Meeting January 13th

The San Saba City Council held a Public Hearing on Monday, January 13th, in the City Hall Chambers. Mayor Ken Jordan called the Council to order at 6:00 p.m., announced a quorum and welcomed everyone. Alderman Marcus Amthor gave the invocation and led everyone in the flag pledges.

The following Council members were in attendance: Robert Whitten, Mayor Pro-Tem; Oleta Behrens, Alderman; Marcus Amthor, Alderman; Michael Nelson, Alderman and Stan Weik, City Manager. Ken Jordan, Mayor, and Shawn Oliver, Alderman, did not attend this meeting.

Others present at this meeting included: Sabrina Maultsby, City Secretary; Charlene Lindsay, City Treasurer; Scott Glaze, City Public Works Director; Michael Wadsworth, Code Enforcement Officer; Luis Rios, Street Department Supervisor; John Whitney, Street Department Employee; Tony Jacobs, Jr., citizen; Javier Baez; citizen and Donna Webb, Reporter - San Saba News & Star.

The San Saba County Commissioners’ Court met for a regular meeting on Tuesday, January 21st, in the County Judge’s Chambers. Judge Byron Theodosis called the meeting to order at 9:06 a.m. and welcomed everyone. Commissioner Rickey Lusty gave the invocation and led everyone in the flag pledges.

Richland Springs’ student athletes and coaches receive State accolades

The Richland Springs Coyotes became the 2019 Division 2 State Champions with a 62-16 victory over the Motley County Matadors. Fans and students were in awe of the facilities at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

Success brings awards and recognition. Here are some of the recognitions the Coyotes have received. The Coyotes now have nine state championships which put them in a world of their own in Texas football. At the state game, junior Landon Burkhart was named Offensive MVP and senior Wade Appleton was named Defensive MVP.

The 2019 All West Texas Six-man Football Team was announced. Junior Matthew Rigdon, spread back/defensive lineman, was named Most Valuable Player. Senior Lane Shannon was named Co-Defensive Most Valuable Player. Senior Deklyn Chandler was named Lineman of the Year. Jerry Burkhart was named Co-Coach of the Year. Junior Landon Burkhart was named All West Texas Running Back. Senior Wade Appleton was named All West Texas Defensive Back.

The 5th annual "Hunting with Soldiers" event was held in San Saba County the weekend of January 10th. Winfield Basham of Cleburne, Texas, arranged the hunt with Gordon Melton of Paducah, Texas. Larry Lee Smith of San Saba helped with the setup within the county. Winfield has held other hunting events for soldiers since 2009.

Twelve soldiers, including President Gordon Melton, and Vice-President Bobby Pennington from Greenville, Texas, arrived Friday, January 9th, and were directed to the Wildflower Lodge where they enjoyed the great facilities.

Other soldiers included: Sean Horval, El Paso, TX; Casey Jones, Mt. Enterprise, TX; Chris Cummins, Norman, OK; Sean Gonzales, Wolfforth, TX; Chad Cummins, Oklahoma City, OK; Brian Haas, Arlington, TX; Kevin Eberle, Edgemont, SD; JC Beltran, Spring, TX; Wes Rutledge, Hutto, TX; and Keith Montgomery, Sowoy, TX.
