San Saba High School cheerleaders place in top ten at UIL State Spirit Championships

The San Saba High School cheerleaders competed in the UIL State Spirit Championships on January 1, 2017. The competition was held at the Fort Worth Convention Center which welcomed teams from all around the state.

The girls competed well in the preliminary rounds which included fight song, crowdleading cheer and band dance. The competition takes the top 20 teams from prelims into a finals competition which combines all components into a timed three minute performance in a game day format. The girls made several changes after prelims increasing the difficulty and technique of their routine. It was a good decision. They made the top ten finishing in seventh place, as well as beating out some of the teams who had done better in prelims.

On January 12, 2017, the San Saba Civic Center provided the opportunity to many of the community to come out and see talents and abilities of the local youth. The annual Youth Fair provides the opportunity to those young people that either live in San Saba County or are enrolled in a local public school to show off some of their many talents in art, crafts, education, food, photography, and technology. All the entries are judged by local volunteers and we are excited to announce our participants in this year’s Youth Fair.

Hunting with Soldiers event held in San Saba County

by Alice Smith

The 2nd annual Hunting with Soldiers event was held in San Saba County the weekend of Friday, January 6th. Winfield Basham, Cleburne, Texas, arranged the hunt with Gordon Melton, Paducah, Texas and Larry Smith helped with the setup in the County. Winfield has held other hunting events for soldiers since 2009.

On Friday, eight soldiers and Field Commander, Bobby Pennington (he is also the Vice President of Hunting with Soldiers Inc.) arrived and were directed to Lynn Hamrick’s Bunk House and Guest House where they stayed and enjoyed great facilities free of charge. The 2016 Hunter’s Guide published by The San Saba News & Star with photos and articles by Macy Ledbetter was given to each soldier. They came back into San Saba at dark and toured Mill Pond Park and enjoyed patriotic music and other music timed with the lighting effects.
