San Saba Garden Club August 2017 Yard of the Month

It was a brilliant August morning as we drove the streets looking for the yard of the month. Astoundingly there are beautiful yards even during our hottest month of the year.

Dedication is what it takes to ensure your yard will thrive. Junior Hernandez calls this commitment his therapy; watering his plants by hand and tending to his beautifully manicured garden. Junior (Yldifonso) and Suzana Hernandez, at 1008 W. Commerce, are this month’s favorite.

The Hernandez family moved into the Craftsman style house San Saba Garden Club August 2017 Yard of the Month Submitted by Dianna Furlan, Chair Yard of the Month San Saba Garden Club which was built around 1939, calling it home since 2004.

Survivor of historic USS Indianapolis honored at Anniversary Reunion

Story by Mandy Lebow Edmondson

In July 1945, the USS Indianapolis, described by her sailors as one of the most beautiful battleships ever built, embarked on a mission so secret that even her crew members were unaware of what cargo they carried. So secret, the captain was refused an escort--even though they had to journey through enemy territory.

On July 26, the crew completed their secret mission delivery to the Pacific island of Tinian (little did they know that less than two weeks later, the atomic bomb they delivered would be dropped on the city of Hiroshima), and they set out for the Leyte Gulf in the Philippines to join the USS Idaho for an invasion of Japan.
