Elm Grove Echoes

By Rhonda Wyatt.

There is still just dust and spider webs to report in the old rain gauge. The wind is howling today, perhaps it will bring some moisture to our dry lands. June Beakley of the Elm Grove community let me know that her brother, Sidney ( Speedy) Holland, of Blanket passed away. Mr. Holland was a graduate of Richland Springs. Prayers go out to the family in this difficult time.

Letter to the Editor

I want to publicly compliment the city employees that painstakingly lighted our park and decorated our streets. I had outof- town guests several times and they were so impressed, as was I, at the way our town was decked
out for Christmas. The dollar tacked on to our utility bill was a voluntary fee for lights. Anyone not wishing to contribute has only to contact City Hall.

The Bend News

By Jo Price

The cold weather is about the biggest topic of the day. The low of 20 degrees was felt Monday, but no wind which helped. Saturday was a different story wind and down in the 40’s, but felt a lot colder than that. According
to the weather report a warming trend will start Tuesday and continue on for the rest of the week. Think everyone is ready for some warmer weather for a while. The lack of pecans, acorns and mesquite beans is usually a sign that the winter weather will be a mild one, but so far that hasn’t been the case. Sometimes even mother nature can be fooled

The Idle American

By Dr. Don Newbury

Likelihood is great that airlines of the world—most of them maligned by flustered flyers venting their feelings when flights go awry—owe much gratitude to a single member of their flock. WestJet, a Canadian airline, has become a social media darling with a “feel good” Christmas video that has rocketed far to the right of “viral” on YouTube and other Internet  sites.

LoneStarGeek Speaks

By Steven McDowell

While using a can of compressed air to blow dust bunnies out of your computer is good routine maintenance, that’s not what I mean by keeping your computer clean. In the last column, I mentioned malware, and touched on the
topic of its removal, but that is only part of keeping your system clean.

The Richland Springs Report

By Sue Ransom

At the risk of being redundant, this year is going far too quickly. It’s not just teachers who are feeling the time crunch. I hear more people wondering where the year has gone and voicing frustration that life is just too busy. I have some of my Christmas shopping done, but I have yet to put one baked good into a pan.

Here Turkey, Turkey, Turkey

By Lindy Lieban Schulz.

It is the week of Thanksgiving and my heart is brought back to memories of family and friends. Our Thanksgivings since living here in San Saba have been quiet ones, normally shared with only Patches and Peepers and so they have been true times of being thankful of times past. I watch the commercials and even the shows on television where families gather and are full of dysfunction make feel nostalgic and seem wonderful. Yes, I know, my weirdness is showing again. Hold on a second I will try and rein it in a little…okay, there…I think I have a handle on it.

Angels Unaware 2013

We need you to help make Christmas a little better for some children in need by supporting the 2013 Angels Unaware program sponsored by the San Saba County Child Welfare Board (CWB). Shortly after Thanksgiving,
they will place a much worn Christmas tree in the atrium of the Arrowhead Bank building in San Saba decorated with little paper Christmas ornaments. Each anonymous "angel" ornament is numbered and has the age (up to
sixth grade), gender, and sometimes the request or need of a known child. A gift price limit of $30 was set to make this giving equitable and affordable
