The Content of Our Character

Before I started typing this morning, I went back and read the last column. Two weeks ago, I felt like I had not gotten that topic out of my system and knew I needed to continue on that track this time. Back to what I collectively called “competition.”

I have been thinking about another way the societal bent toward competition is manifested—we seem to always be measuring ourselves and others against…something. I really cannot say exactly what that something is. Are we measuring against the celebrities that are talked about constantly on television? Are we measuring ourselves against the altered pictures we see in advertisements, magazines, and everywhere on the internet? Are we measuring ourselves against other people that we know? Sometimes we measure ourselves against ourselves. As I inch ever closer to another big decade birthday, I find myself looking in the mirror and wondering where the younger version of me went and lament the fact that she is never coming back.
